Of "Showgirls", Los Gatos, salsa and Star Trek

What an interesting past couple of days. I must say, I am quite relieved that finals are OVER. The Honors final, simply put, was RETARDED. Juries, those were awkward. I have no idea as to what in the world was wrong with the Southards and Dr. A, but something funky was going on. Oh, well, it's done ( Read more... )

The star trek convention in Dearborn is scheduled sometime in October (Oct 13-14 I think)!!!!!!!! It's going to kick!!!!

P.S. If you need a star trek fix to tide you over until then, the dude who played Commander Chakotay from Star Trek Voyager is at the Detroit comic convention on May 14. Personally, I'm going after Meeting of the Minds for all the indy comics, but I'm staying for the ultra nerdy star trek Q&A session.

Is May 14 a Saturday? I think I'm sitting in with DiBlassio's band on May 12, at least, I'm pretty sure that's the day. I'm getting kinda nervous for that, but it'll be fun.

I'll think about the Star Trek Q&A session, it sounds interesting.

I think its a Saturday. For the Q&A session I'm going to rent a few seasons of Star Trek and come up with some insanely obscure and nerdy questions to grill the dude with.

Good luck with the sit-in improv performance. I've never really heard that much jazz oboe/flute before, but I'm sure you'll do fine.

I can only imagine that. I was kind of suprised - a lot of the music ed majors I talk to are Star Trek fans. Though, there is the divide with the people who like Star Wars.

Thanks for the break a leg stuff. If you want to go down there, we're going next Thursday, it'll be a good time. It's $5 to get in; DiBlassio's band goes on at 8:15. I have no idea what time I get to play with them, which sucks 'cause I'd like to warm up, but if I can't, oh, well. Anyway, they do Latin jazz (if you're a Cal Tjader fan, you'll love it), and they're REALLY ridiculously good. It's a really nice club.

Have fun picking obscure and nerdy Star Trek questions!

I don't really know who Cal Tjader is and for the most part the only real latin jazz I know is the stereotypical brazilian bossa nova stuff from Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao (spelling=?) Gilberto. Still, if I don't end up having some crappy night research schedule I'm game for it.

Ahh, I love Jobim. In my improv class, we had to transcribe phrases from different solos, and one of mine was a Jobim piece. He's awesome, as is Joao Gilberto (I think that's right). For him, I'd say I love the original "Girl From Ipanema" with Stan Getz on tenor sax and his wife singing the English vocals. But yeah, all that stuff is good. You'd probably like the Tjader stuff.

But yeah, you're more than welcome to come with us, it'll be fun. Just let me know, and if not, good luck with that night research. Sounds like you have your hands pretty well full with that stuff.
