Here are two fabric combinations for a 18th century style *costume*, not for any sort of historical anything. I plan on stays but no fussy hand sewing for a concert that's coming later this month and possibly for haloween costume. So let me borrow your eyes for color combinations.

My vote is for the gray, and I almost always choose black :)

My eye picked the both out at the same time, and I really like it! I was worried that the gray in the stripe wasn't the same gray as in the peticoat material, but as it turns out, the further away it is, the less that detail is apparent. Gray it is!

Mmmm; yes, I almost always choose black, but in this case, the gray would be far more effective with the stripe, I think. The black kind of deadens the stripe, so it looks dull. The gray underpinning makes the stripey-ness stand out quite attractively. Good choice. Do post a pic. when done, so we can see the final effect.

I was going to start sticking it together for the concert later this month, and then throw it up on to dressdiaries, but I'm sure I'd x post it here too!

I'm with Grey too. But my experience with 18th century is machine junkie or not there are some bits it is actually easier to handsew. Specifically the binding on Stays. I tried to do this once on a machine and never again!

I will be sewing the stays boning channels by machine. For ease of assembly, I will be stitching the side seams together by hand, as well as the binding. Since the gown and petticoat are costumes, I'm going to just whip them up by machine. Pretty streight forward after the stay binding is done!
