I've discovered some really awesome things lately. Well, some of them are awesome and some of them aren't, like the discovery that my roommate has great taste in whiny music. About half of the songs I hear from her computer daily, no matter the tempo, are performed by individuals with rather whiny voices. Her taste in music is like her taste in movies, though - the lyrics have to be incredibly profound for her to even care.
I'm content with no lyrics at all, personally - all I need is a well-tempered clavier. That's not to say that I don't listen to other things, like J-pop or the music my parents listened to (I love '60s, '70s and '80s music), but classical music and jazz (to an extent) will always be my favorites, especially the former. It's just...I'm not sure how to describe it. (I also have the exact same musical taste as my dad, for the most part. Actually, he and I are nearly carbon copies of one another personality-wise, to the point where we draw the exact same things in Pictionary to give hints to the other players. It's kind of awesome.)
Back to the discovery business, though - here's an awesome one. Every Friday, MiLB.com puts out a feature called Movin' On Up, which covers all the prospects who made their professional debuts that week. Obviously, this week's headliner is none other than this fellow, seen here with Eric Hinske:
Evan Longoria is living up to the hype, and I must say I'm impressed with him so far. I really can't wait for the Sox to play the Rays this year - I want to get a good look at Evan. The other players in
this week's installment are John Bowker (Giants), German Duran (Rangers), Hernan Iribarren (Brewers), Jeff Niemann (Rays), Alex Serrano (Angels)...and this kid:
Jed Lowrie, IF, Boston Red Sox
CALLED UP: Contract purchased from Triple-A Pawtucket April 10, when 3B Mike Lowell went on the disabled list.
DEBUT: April 15, in a 5-3 win against Cleveland. The starting third baseman, he batted eighth and went 1-for-3 with three RBIs, including a two-run single in the seventh inning for his first big-league hit. After five days of inactivity on the bench, Lowrie became the first Red Sox player since 1947 to collect three RBIs in his Major League debut.
NOTES: A shortstop by trade, the Red Sox had a pretty good one of those in the bigs in 2007 American League Rookie of the Year, Dustin Pedroia. the club started using Lowrie, a Stanford product, around the middle infield over the past few months in hopes of being able to turn to him as a utility infielder if the need arose. And the need arose when Lowell left the Sox's April 9 game with a sprained thumb and utility infielder Alex Cora experienced elbow pain the same day. Lowrie is a smart and savvy player (as you would expect from a Stanford kid), with a live bat from both sides of the plate. He has a little bit of unofficial time with the club, having been one of the "extra players" taken to Japan with Boston when they opened the season there against Oakland.
Not sure why they're calling Dustin a shortstop when we currently have him at second base - but he was a shortstop in high school and college. I also bolded that one bit just because it made me smile.
It's absolutely beautiful outside today - so nice that I walked up to 7-Eleven to get a giant Slurpee, which is sitting on my desk right now as I type this (hence the title of this entry). As I was walking along on campus, I saw fellow students out pretty much everywhere - some sunbathing, others playing around. A lot of people were out there with their gloves playing long toss, and seeing that actually made me a little sad because I knew none of my college friends would be willing to do that with me, even though seeing people outside really makes me want to get out there myself. It's times like these I miss my kid brother - he and I would've been out on the front lawn playing long toss in weather like this, for sure, or we might be out in the street with a Frisbee or something. My glove is sitting right next to me right now, and the fact that I can't use it because my brother is in New Jersey and I am in Pennsylvania depresses me a little.
But my family is coming out here to visit me next week for my birthday, and I'm incredibly excited to see them. My brother's my best friend - I can't even begin to describe how much I miss hanging out with him. Hopefully on Thursday afternoon he and I will be outside playing a little long toss.
