A Brief Protest Timeline

Mar 19, 2008 15:16

I decided to explore what might have happened during the protest. Since English class was a bit slow, I actually wrote this down in class. I know, that wasn't very good of me, but since I've already read the play we were working with ( coincidentally, Julius Caesar) I didn't take as many notes as I didn't need to. So I did this instead.

3/18/08, 11:47 P.M.: Terry Francona is made aware of the pay issue. He loses sleep over the problem, especially the bit about how to break the news to the coaching staff.

3/19/08, 8:00 A.M.: The coaching staff is made aware of the issue. The players go into congress to determine what to do.

8:30 A.M.: Mike Lowell announces that the players will not go to Japan if the coaches do not receive equal pay. He is seconded by David Ortiz and Curt Schilling.

8:35 A.M.: Players still in congress. Sen. Jed Lowrie (SS/2B, Ore.) proposes issuing a written ultimatum. Despite his current stationing in Pawtucket, he is granted permission to write it.

9:18 A.M.: The players begin to communicate directly with Major League Baseball over the phone with Schilling as their chosen negotiator.

9:56 A.M.: Schilling informs MLB that he is in possession of two WMDs named Josh Beckett and Jonathan Papelbon. He asks for the coaches' salaries as a ransom.

10:13 A.M.: This does not scare MLB, so Schilling plays his trump card - Julian Tavarez.

10:24 A.M.: The Lowrie Resolution passes. Schilling reads it through the telephone, retracting his less rational threats.

10:32 A.M.: MLB discovers Jed Lowrie is a Minor Leaguer and shoots the resolution down.

10:34 A.M.: The players attempt to overturn the veto.

11:00 A.M.: The Oakland A's wake up in Arizona.

11:30 A.M.: Captain Varitek agrees to hold a press conference at noon. Schilling renames him Captain Snow.

11:57 A.M.: Dustin Pedroia and Coco Crisp appear on the field briefly to raise crowd morale.

12:00 P.M.: Captain Jason 'Snow' Varitek speaks to the media, informing them that the players will not take the field unless the coaches get their money.

12:13 P.M.: The A's join in out in Arizona.

12:30 P.M.: Instead of signing autographs, like they were originally planning to do, the players remain in the clubhouse on the phone with MLB. Daisuke Matsuzaka is sent to pitch in the Minor League game instead.

12:50 P.M.: The problem is resolved, and the players have won. David Aardsma becomes the new starter. The players take the field, victorious, and the coaches will be getting their money.

1:10 P.M.: Game on!
