Jacoby Ellsbury: Smarter than Johnny Damon? (Yep.)

Dec 04, 2007 11:52

So the big news today is that Jacoby decided to hire Scott Boras as his agent. At first I was stunned - how could such a nice kid hire someone like that? Then I read this comment on the Globe's discussion boards:

The key thing that happened yesterday is Ellsbury signing with Boras. That's HUGE. The Twins do NOT want a Boras client on their roster who is a couple years away from a big payday. THAT'S probably why they prefer Crisp and Lester.

Smart move by Ellsbury, if he did it to remain with the Sox.
Very clever, Jacoby, if that's really why you did it. I wonder if he'll fire Boras as soon as the deal's over. That would be really funny.

Right now, it looks like it'll be Lester, Crisp, Lowrie (nuuuu!) and either Masterson or Bowden again. I'll miss Jed (and will probably drive out to Minnesota to steal him back), but once again, there's no Ellsbury or Buchholz in there, which I approve of. I know their deadline's gone by, but I wouldn't count the Yankees out - surely Hank Steinbrenner knows that he really needs someone like Santana on the staff, right? Or has he screwed up again? Your call.

I really can't wait for all this to be over. I tried to watch other things last night - although I've never really been into football, I've been keeping an eye on the Patriots due to the way their season is going. Their game against Baltimore was surprisingly good and close, and my floor was in an uproar because we have some Ravens fans and some Pats fans living here (the Pats fans are the only people on the floor who will talk about the Sox with me).

In other news, the gateway drug that got me into middle infielders is going to Houston. Kazuo Matsui signed a three-year deal to play second base for the Astros; as a result, there is a rumor that the Rockies are now interested in Jed Lowrie. If this somehow happens, I might be able to visit him, as I have family friends who live near Denver.

Also, did you know that Craig Hansen suffered from sleep apnea? Me neither. There is a pitcher for my fictional college, Slumberwood, who suffers from narcolepsy, which causes him similar fatigue problems sometimes, though, so it's interesting to me to see that the scenario I cooked up could actually be somewhat plausible. (Speaking of Slumberwood, I know I have a bio or two to get up soon - I'll get to that sometime this week, I promise!)

Curious about sleep apnea? Check out WebMD. I've used them for school projects, especially in the anatomy class I took last year, and their information is usually pretty accurate. (Additionally, here's the link to the data on narcolepsy if you want to do a comparison. They're definitely not the same at all.)

Right, I'm out for now - there's work to be done. But these are some pretty interesting events - let's see how it pans out.

EDIT: Finally, a Hot Stove update that I might like! One of the comments from this post on the official Sox community caught my eye:

Johan Santana to the Red Sox is all but done. Jon Lester, a center fielder, Justin Masterson and Ryan Kalish are the package. More details now.

--Will Carroll, 5:15 p.m.

Since Lester is in the deal, we can presume that the center fielder is not Jacoby Ellsbury - let's assume for the time being that it's Coco Crisp. Now the deal would comprise Lester, Crisp, Masterson and Kalish. What does that mean for me? Well, look at whose name is absent. That's right, Jed Lowrie isn't there! If this ends up being the final deal, things will certainly work out for me, that's for sure!
