So I get sick...and then everything happens at once. Today was one of the busiest days in some time baseball-wise. I'm not going to go into too many details, as you can probably get those anywhere, but what you need to know is that Barry Bonds was indicted on four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice, A-Rod is pretty much back with the Yankees, and Derek Jeter spent the last several years pretending he lived in Florida in order to pay less on his taxes. Lots of things to think about there.
Mesa's run in the AFL officially ended last night. (I'm therefore taking my last opportunity to use my Jed Lowrie icon this year for the time being.) Haigwood, a Sox prospect, started their final game last night, and he went four strong scoreless innings for them. Two other Sox prospects appeared in the game - Jon Still, who drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in Amaury Marti to win the game in the ninth inning, and my pet prospect, Jed Lowrie. (I'm proud - Jed didn't strike out once last night. He went 1-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.)
Here's the box score, if you're interested. It took them some time, but they finally highlighted the Sox prospects in the AFL in a short video. If you've never met any of them before,
you can get to know them here - the video is currently linked to on MLB.com. In it you'll see Lowrie, Still and Haigwood, along with Dusty Brown, who I mentioned recently as having his contract purchased by the big club, Craig Hansen, Jose Vaquedano, and Hunter Jones. Although he's now one of our prospects, the video makes no mention of Jay Marshall. Lincoln Holdzkom, who also goes unmentioned, is also ours. (For a full list of Sox prospects playing winter ball,
check out this page on SoxProspects.com.) Hansen was up with the big club briefly a few times, but he's a closer prospect and that job is...well, taken. He does have decent stuff from what I've seen of him, but when your competition is Jonathan Papelbon...yeah, you get my point. (He does have a stare, but it's nowhere near as entertaining intimidating as Papelbon's is.)
Speaking of Papelbon, if you're interested in tracking his little brother Josh's progress through the Sox farm system, his player page is
here. As you probably know, though, he actually has two younger brothers, one of whom is in the Cubs farm system (Jeremy Papelbon's information can be found
here). You can actually connect Jeremy with his older brother team-wise by less than six degrees - Jeremy is on the same team (Peoria) as Sam Fuld, who played with Jed Lowrie in both college (Stanford) and the AFL (Mesa), who played against Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury in college (Pac-10), who both currently play with Jonathan and won a World Series with him. See, fun! Well, not as fun as other things, but somewhat fun, I guess.
And incidentally, if you're wondering what to get Pap for Christmas, I'd put my money on
this. Just a thought.
