I just found out that John Oliver (of The Daily Show fame) was a former member of the
Cambridge Footlights. You don't know how much that explains.
For those who are unaware, the Footlights have produced a great number of British comedians in the past, including some noted satirists (namely half the cast of Beyond the Fringe, Peter Cook and Jonathan Miller, as well as David Frost), three of the Pythons (Chapman, Cleese and Idle), Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, all three of the Goodies (Tim Brooke-Taylor, Bill Oddie and Graeme Garden), and a great many other people (read the Wikipedia article I linked to above for a full list).
My point: Oliver's in good company. Very good company.
Oh, as an added note, Wikipedia has a picture of his delivery of one of the most amusing lines I've heard on the show yet.
If you've seen the show, you'll know what this is.
