Well, this is it, ladies and gentlemen. Tonight starts the end of the regular season. The Red Sox and Yankees both have six games left, six must-win games, if you will. This determines who ends up with the division title.
The Sox have home field advantage for all six of those games. Travis Buck is on the DL, which is apparently good news for Papelbon, but this means we won't get to see a pre-game reunion between Buck and one of his teammates from ASU, some kid who played shortstop in college but switched to second base later on. Really, Dustin and Travis played together in college.
And to make it even better, I found a picture of Travis playing against Jacoby. If you look carefully enough at
this picture of Jacoby taking a lead off of first base, you'll be able to see what looks like Travis playing in right field in the background. Sadly, I couldn't find any images on the site of Jacoby playing against Dustin because the pictures were from 2005 and Dustin was drafted in 2004. Actually, Jacoby would be drafted later that year (2005), as well.
Good news on the Westlake front: Somebody Owes Me Money, a book he wrote back in the 1960s (copyrighted to 1969, according to the excerpt posted on the website), is going to be reprinted and released in June 2008. The first chapter is posted
here. It's not one of the Dortmunder or Parker books, but from what I've read I'm eagerly looking forward to it. By the way, if you haven't read any of Westlake's works and want to, you can start pretty much anywhere because he's got so much range. Parker is pure hardcore crime, whereas Dortmunder is, well, not. But Dortmunder is infinitely funnier. (Parker also doesn't have my favorite fictional getaway driver, Stan Murch.)
The game starts later tonight, so I'll probably be a bit antsy for the rest of the day. Oh, well, that's that. Maybe I'll start up a Donald E. Westlake community or something just so that we can get other Westlakeophiles together on LJ. Then I won't feel weird about doodling Murch in my sketchbook or anything...
EDIT:
No freaking way. EDIT 2: Pedroia is back, baby! Full game recap to come tomorrow.
EDIT 3: Tampa Bay walk-off in the tenth! I'll probably give that game a nod tomorrow, too, as it means our magic number is now down to three! Woohoo!
