Victorian Cartoonists

I found an archive of cartoons by John Leech today. Leech was a mid-Victorian cartoonist who drew for Punch and illustrated novels (including A Christmas Carol by Dickens).

I'm linking to these images for a number of reasons - one can get a good feel of the 1850s from these illustrations, but it's also a good way to visualize an art style of the period for those of you interested in Basil's school chum William Conrad. Will did most of his chief work in the 1840s and 1850s, as well (he was particularly fond of caricaturing his teachers from Eton, especially Herman Bagstock and his horse).

Here is the archive itself. Have fun browsing!

This one's my favorite, though. I had to link to this one, too. (I must be one of maybe ten Americans who understands how this game works, but oh, well.)

If my scanner ever decides to work again, perhaps I'll someday post some of Will's sketches of the characters he called "Bigsby and Cordelia" (Bagstock and his horse as "disguised" by Basil in his satirical Letters From An Old Etonian). Until then, however, we'll just have to pretend.
