"I'm a fanfiction connoisseur/addict/you-name-it, and I really don't see the problem. I feel inclined to correct you, Master of the Universe began and grew on Twilighted.net, not FF.net.
Also, who says you can't write fanfiction based off fanfiction? That's ridiculous. You can write fanfiction about anything: comics, commercials, sitcoms, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson riding in a car together (ref, 2008-TTE) . It's all fanfiction. It's all fan works based off other work, and it's all pretty wonderful.
I'm going to elaborate about this elsewhere but who reads 50 Shades or MOTU think, woah. This is just like Twilight! ? Seriously, this is a different story. Yes, it's a work by a Twilight fan, Yes, it's categorized under Twilight, but if a story can that easily be turned into 50 Shades just by switching the names, it's just catchy fiction. It's not about vampires or Forks, Washington, it's a smutbook." ~13
That above was just a comment I made a minute ago to someone named Jackie on a comparison review for 50 Shades and Master of the Universe. I got myself really worked up about it all, what people have been saying about the story, and fanfiction, and really want some input/thoughts!
Arguments:
- 50 Shades is 89% of Master of the Universe (all that's changed are the names). Because of this, it's pretty much published fanfiction.
- Stephanie Meyer should be pulling her hair out--Snowqueens is making all this money on her series!
- Plagiarism: 50 Shades is plagiarized off MOTU. (?)
- Snowqueens leveraged her MOTU fans into her original work success
- Some other crap that I don't remember.
Does anyone think that AU-AH fanfiction is really fanfiction? If the names can easily be changed, is the work not "original"? Who owns the name "Harry" or "Bella"?
