Most of my high school hated the football team, because they sucked so badly. I couldn't name one star athlete, except for the teams that I was on and if they were in several of my classes.

In Memphis, football was only big during homecoming, and even then the voting for homecoming queen and shit was way bigger. I'd say basketball was more popular overall.

Football in rural/semi-rural Central Florida: football was a massive deal at my school because we were state champions for ten years or something. But I couldn't have told you who was on the team, except the kicker, because (a) he was a friend and (b) he set a state record and everyone made a big fuss. CAVEAT: I went to a school-within-a-school, so maybe football-jock worship was bigger in the main school population.

Apparently the show/movie Friday Night Lights is incredibly accurate as to how football is worshipped in small-town Texas, but that's just hearsay.

Our team sucked so no one gave a crap. In fact, our entire athletic program was sorely lacking. I think the marching band was actually a bigger deal than the teams they supported. LOL

I knew one guy who used to be on the football team his freshman year -- he's the friend I came out to who said "Yeah, I'm queer too. So is everyone else you've been hanging out with. Sheesh, get a clue!" He was embarrassed to be i football, and wouldn't tell us he couldn't hang because of practice. So yeah, not so much with the "football = big deal". This was Minneapolis, in a big urban public school.

Also, football was a non-event at my college. Rugby? That was a BIG ASS DEAL.

Ha, my undergrad didn't have a football team. the biggest deal sport was intramural ultimate frisbee. Well, if you don't count surfing, which was the actual biggest sport.

My grad school experience has been pretty much the polar opposite, and not just because there isn't any good surfing in Michigan.
