classy_lawyers came back! Not for good, just enough to remind me that it exists and why it's so addictive. This is cruel.

NMU sequel = awesome. *fangirl sigh*

Okay, I guess I never told you guys the story of the time I went firefly watching in the Philippines.

Once upon a time (ie, March), I was in Donsol, the Philippines with my classmates. We went whale shark diving, and it was awesome. Then the people at the incredibly shitty hotel we were staying at asked if we wanted to go on a firefly boat tour. We said, yes, of course.

So we went off in different groups in little autorickshaws to the nearby river, where we got into boats. We boated up the river and...

...you guys, it was the amazingest thing ever. There were these hordes of fireflies around certain specific trees on the riverbank, all blinking in unison. It was astonishing. I have never seen anything like it.

Nature is truly miraculous.

Humans, however, are problematic. As we stared at the blinking lights of the fireflies, we became aware of a certain issue - namely, that our boat was being pulled over by the tourism police. Apparently, our guides weren't licensed tour guides, and since none of us had life vests, were violating safety laws. The police announced that they were arresting our guides and would take us to the police station.

Except, none of that happened. I don't know if the guides bribed them or what. (The Philippines is SUPER corrupt.) Instead, the guides started boating slowly back down the river in the direction we'd come from. Then we stopped at a house on the riverbank for a minute.

Then we boated slowly some more. And then we stopped again. This time, our guides got out of the boat and...left us there.

We waited for about five minutes, baffled.

Eventually, we got out of the boat and walked up the riverbank. Fortunately, we had stopped near an overpass across the river, so we hiked up to the road and caught autorickshaws back to our hotel.

We never paid the guides, nor did we ever figure out why they abandoned us on the riverbank. It was very confusing.

The fireflies, though. You guys. They were INCREDIBLE. (I tried to find a video on YouTube, but the videos I did find looked like the ones I tried to take - entirely black. They need someone with better equipment to film it.)

it's a magical world, wtf?, true story, philippines
