"Let's go around the room," the teacher began, nodding to her students, "and introduce yourself and tell us one dish you can make without reading any instructions." With a nod and a point, she indicated the first student on her right.
Six students later, there were four experts at either peanut butter or tuna fish sandwiches, and two claiming their dish of choice was macaroni and cheese.
When the teacher's gaze fell on her, Maddy made a face. "Maddy Skinner... um... Oh," she nodded again. "Brown sugar carrots."
"What's that?" one of the boys asked. Two other students echoed the question and the teacher smiled.
"Maddy?" she prompted.
Maddy turned to face the curious students and shared: "You cook the carrots in water. And, in a different pan, you mix butter and brown sugar. Then you put that on the carrots and stir it up." Many of the students made faces, but all of them seemed to be impressed.
"We have that at Thanksgiving," one of the girls replied, nodding to the others at her table. "They're really good."
"Sounds gross," one of the boys countered. A handful of the students mumbled in agreement.
"My grandmother made them with honey," the teacher offered, giving her students a warm smile, "instead of the brown sugar." With another smile to Maddy, the teacher nodded her thanks and continued: "Next student? Your dish?"
"Hot dogs?"
