Grissom stood at the window, staring out in silence as the rain fell. He didn't actually see the storm, because his thoughts were in the past. It started raining shortly after the paramedics took his father away, and all Grissom remembered from that night was the look on his mother's face as he told her what the paramedics and police officer were saying.

She had been the one to realize something was wrong with his father, but he was the one who had to call for help. Not that there was anything anyone could do to help, at that point. His father had died quietly, peacefully - at least that's what his mother insisted - but Grissom didn't have peace.

"Grissom," Catherine called to him, finally finding him in the living room. "Grissom," she called again, then made a face and moved into the room. Al and David had already removed the body, leaving Grissom to process the scene. Catherine had been at another scene, but had finally arrived to assist him in the evidence collection.

Moving next to him, Catherine nudged Grissom's arm and leaned to look at him. "Gil?" she said quietly. When he turned to face her, Catherine shook her head. "You okay?" Grissom stared at her for a moment, not knowing what she had said.

"Case?" she asked, nodding toward the crime scene waiting to be processed. "Are you okay?" she asked again, stepping away from him.

"Yeah," Grissom replied. "I'm fine."
