Birthday Present Leigh couldn't breathe. She'd heard her father once say that it felt like his heart had been ripped out, for the third time, but she didn't understand what that meant. Not really.
Now, though...
She understood.
For the first time in so long, she was happy. All right, she wasn't entirely happy, but for the first time in a while, she was content with life, with herself. And then, down in the garden, her mother had come back to her. Even if it was just for a moment, her mother was back.
Leigh escorted her mother back to her room and, once the door was closed, she ran - ran - for her father's office. The last time the guards had seen her tearing down the halls, she was still just a princess.
She'd pushed into the office, calling for her father, and stopped short when she realized there was someone else there.
Chris was there.
In a sleek Elite Guard uniform.
"Leigh-" Wyatt started.
"Vi-" Chris said at the same time.
Leigh backed toward the door as fast as she could and, once again, ran down the hall. She bolted into the first room that she knew had a bathroom - which happened to be her father's room - and leaned over the sink.
How could she have been so foolish? Why did she actually think there was one person in all the Outer Zone who didn't know who she really was?
Leigh lowered herself to the floor and curled up into a ball as the tears streamed down her face.
She had never wanted her mother so badly.
