There were a select number of things Angela never did. One was to lunch out, on her own, on a Monday. Another was to seek a lawyer's advice on ending forty years of marriage. And yet another was to leave a cryptic message on her son's answering machine, telling him to clean up the visible part of his living room because she was planning to come see him that afternoon. On a lesser occasion, she wouldn't have called, but she wanted Peter to expect her. After all, anticipation lead to preparation and knowing her youngest, he'd expect worse than her news.
At four fifteen in the afternoon, she rang his bell, trying to appear less cheerful than she felt. She couldn't expect him to understand otherwise.
