"Hey, Charlie."
Charlie looked up from where she was behind the counter. A rag was in her hand and she was wiping down the counter tops.
"Yeah, Lloyd?"
Lloyd was one of the local policemen who worked closely with the Sheriff. He was always stopping into the Diner during and after his shifts. Lynette, the head waitress there at the Diner, told her that he had a crush on her. Charlie was flattered, but she had nothing but friendly feelings towards the man.
"What's a nine letter word for 'jaunty?'" Lloyd gave her a sweet grin. "Starts with an 'i'."
"Oh, Lloyd, stop it," the Sheriff, Billy, said, and smacked the younger man lightly on the arm. "If you can't figure it out, let me do the crossword puzzle."
"Starting with an 'i?'" Charlie asked. Lloyd nodded, Billy scoffed. Charlie's nose scrunched with concentration. It was so easy to come up with answers. She wondered why they never tried anything harder. "...Try 'impetuous.'"
"...Amazes me every time," Billy muttered, watching Lloyd put the word into the empty spaces. He snatched the newspaper away from Lloyd to continue it himself. "She ain't an encylopedia," he told him.
Charlie fought off the urge to correct his words. But she didn't. Billy never appreciated it, even though it amused Lloyd to no end.
"Happy to help," she told them cheerfully. The door jangled, alerting her of more customers. As she watched them find a seat, she removed menus and headed over to them.
"Welcome to the Burnt Toast Diner..."
Yet another normal day at work.
