Summary: Sophie knows what she's doing, but she's not sure what she wants. What she's doing at the moment is looking for answers.

It had taken a few days to get back on track, but Sophie was finally at least somewhat confident that this was not, in fact, going to completely overturn her life. Everyone at school was being helpful and understanding, of course, which really helped in getting back up to snuff with her coursework. Unfortunately, that meant it was probably time to decide now what she was going to do about this thing.
It probably wasn't something you could do half-assed. And neither was med school.
The greeting with David owed rather more to a handshake than to a hug, but that wasn't unusual. There was only so much like a daughter you could feel to someone you'd first met as a near-adult. But her relationship with Mom had always been warm, and under the circumstances it was even more so. And they caught up, and had dinner, and Sophie spent most of the time half-listening to small talk without making much of any herself. It was nice enough, she supposed, and would have been much better if she didn't have something big on her mind. Eventually, David just gave up in the face of the awkwardness and went somewhere to let his wife have some time alone with her daughter.
"Did I always want to be a doctor?" asked Sophie, finally.
"Oh, honey," said her mother with sympathy. "I don't know what was going on in your head all the time, but you certainly seemed to."
"Played at it with my dolls, that kind of thing?"
"Oh, not like that. You just... never seemed in any doubt that it was going to happen."
"Oh." Sophie sat there in silence for a while longer. It's what I'm doing. But what do I want? Somehow, she doubted Mom was going to be able to answer that one for her.
Eventually she left the place and made a beeline for the place she'd first found Claude. It was time to start looking for answers.
