Beatrice would say she hasn't had a moment's rest since she was promoted to assistant manager two years or so ago. She had been so happy to receive the news at the time. The pay was dramatically increased, her hours more flexible, and gosh darn it, she was just moving up in the world. The only problem with that was she was handed far more responsibilities as well. Not that she minded responsibility, but the constant bombardment of things to do was a little tiresome. Before, all she really had to do was stay in the back, organizing and cataloguing. Now she actually had to be out front in the store and deal with customers when her boss wasn't around, like today. Like everyday, really. It had to be several degrees below outside, she decided. The heating in this old place wasn't the greatest. She was thankful for her little space heater that her father had insisted she buy for just the ocassion. The tiny fan inside swirled the cold stale air around all day, but at least it was warmer. Even so, she bundled up in several layers of clothing. She even had a scarf wrapped around her throat. Ah, winter in New York.
There was a light stream of music running in the background, the way she always liked it when she had to be minding the store. Good old Divine Right. There wasn't a whole lot to do at the moment, so Bea sat herself down behind the counter and read. That was the lovely thing about working in a bookstore. For bookworms like Bea, this was heaven. Whenever she had free time on her hands, she would just curl up in some corner and open a book. Although lately, especially after her chat with Gia, she was beginning to consider the writing thing more seriously.
For most, today wasn't a grab a book and read kind of day. It was a go ice-skating and drink hot cocoa day. People were probably driving down to Florida or the Caribbean, some place lovely and warm like that. Therefore, she was very surprised when she heard the light ding of the doorbell, signaling someone's entry.
