She had left them twice: once in life and once in death. The second departure was no easier than the first. With the first passing, there was always the chance that her spirit would visit them to soothe their pain. Now they could only see her in dreams.

Vincent took the second departure worse than anyone. He hadn't even seen her, and that's what hurt the most. He knew she was there: she gave Cloud the drive to defeat Bahamut Sin, she soothed his pain, she healed the Geostigma, and she gave everyone hope. He could not see her, but when she left, he felt it. The lonliness filled every distorted cell in his body.

Once again he buried himself in self-loathing. This was part of his punishment, atonement for his sins: not stoping Lucrecia, not stopping Sephiroth, not saving Aerith. Too many sins needed to be cleansed, and Vincent had all the time in the world. The others tried ti rouse him out of his depression, but after each event, Vincent just went back to his quiet, depressive self. He never stayed long, and as the years passed, he just stopped leaving his perch by the lake.

It wasn't until Marlene and Denzel's wedding seventeen years later that Vincen perked up just a bit.

No one noticed her at first: the quiet girl siting in the back of the hall. She was unobtrusive, wearing a pale pink dress, her hair pulled back in a braid. No one would have even thought anything of her if it wasn't for the large wolf that padded into the reception hall and sat at her side.

Someone screamed, everyone turned, and the girl tried to hide her face, but to no avail. The entire bridal party seemed to gasp and shout at the same time. Several rushed from their seats, but it was Vincent who got to her first, looking so confused and a little angry.

She smiled nervously, shrinking a bit in her seat. Before she could say anything, though, the bride herself had practically toppled the woman over. "Oneechan, you came!"

The wolf lifted his head for only a moment, eyeing the others before it settled back down again. The woman hugged the bride and smiled. "I wouldn't miss this for the world," she said softly.

"Well," Cid grinned, "looks like it's a double celebration, eh?" He looped an arm around Vincent's neck and pulled his head down, so the quiet man was practically eyelevel with the seated girl. "This old coot's been depressive for years."

She blinked, sighing a little. "I'm sorry..." she whispered.

Vincent simply shook his head and looked at her. "Welcome home, Aerith."

Aerith smiled and leaned up quickly, kissing Vincent on the cheek. "Thank you."
