Title: Clairvoyant Brains
Summary: Really brain? You want to do what now?
Sometimes I wonder if my brain can predict the future. I feel that it knows more than I do. One time I had this report due and of course I waited until the last possible moment. You see, my brain was telling me that I had plenty of time to finish it. I read over the report and determined that, yeah, I only needed a couple of hours to get this done.
It was 8pm the day before the report was due and I finally said, “Brain, shouldn’t we get started?” Well Brain, instead, said, “Eat! I’m hungry!” and my stomach rumbled in agreement. Around 12am I finally couldn’t take it anymore and made something to eat. By 2am, Brain told me to sleep. Once again I asked if I should instead be working on my report. Well Brain said, “Sleepy! I’m sleepy!” And with a rub of my full belly, I tucked myself into bed, setting the alarm to go off at 10am.
I woke at ten and asked my brain if I should shower or consume a rare breakfast. I still had five hours before my report was due so I wasn’t very worried. Brain said, “Sleep. Sleep. Sleep.” And so, even while disagreeing with Brain, I napped for another hour. When I woke, my phone demanded I play with it so it wasn’t until 12:30pm that I actually got out of bed.
I rushed to my laptop and started the report. Around 2:30, I only had two sections (of course they were the hardest parts) left. It was then that I received a text from my project partner saying that she thought the report was due Wednesday and that she was away all weekend. I told her to tell the teacher and asked for some stuff I left with her that I needed to finish my report.
In the end, time was up, neither of our reports were done, and my teacher gave us a two day extension with no penalty. Whatever my partner said in her email made the teacher happy, I guess.
Anyway, the point I was trying to get at was that my brain somehow knew this would happen. That’s why my body didn’t feel nervous or stressed even as the minutes ticked away. This wasn’t even the first time something like this happened.
It started to make me curious so, after relaxing for ten minutes, I went the internet and searched: I WONDER IF brains can somehow predict the future. (Yes, I accidently had it on caps-lock for the first three words.) I came across an article that said We CAN predict the future (a bit): Why the brain knows what's going to happen before it does by Graham Smith.
Graham Smith said, “People subconsciously make thousands of tiny predictions each day, whether it's contemplating when a bus will arrive, who is knocking on the door or if a dropped glass will break.
Now scientists are beginning to unravel how the brain is such a surprisingly accurate fortune-teller - but only when it comes to mundane events.”
I couldn’t agree more. So in conclusion, yeah, apparently brains are fortune-tellers.
