He couldn’t sleep. This wasn’t something new. He had trouble sleeping ever since she left him all those years ago. It was made worse during her seventh year when she decided to actually date the one she used to call a prat. He started getting on by only sleeping a few hours a night, but that’s when he started to look even worse than he did. Since…since she died, even that wasn’t helping.

It was odd for Severus Snape to feel this way - to want to cry over the loss of someone who had stopped loving him even though he never stopped loving her. And all over a mistake that he could not erase and that she could never understand why he had to do it. Why he had to call Lily a mudblood in order to make sure that Slytherin house knew which side he was on. She didn’t have to deal with the teasing from both his house and others until he had done that in their fifth year. And she didn’t care to listen. Why - why did he continue to care about her, even asking Voldemort to spare her? Something the Dark Lord didn’t do and the main reason why he became Dumbledore’s man.

Yet, at this moment, as he couldn’t sleep and was crying over the loss of her, he wondered about going into the afterlife after her. He knew he couldn’t. He promised to look after her son, who he learned had Lily’s eyes. He forced his eyes closed as he forced a happy thought to the surface to create his patronus. The silver doe came out of his wand and moved to curl up around Severus to help him sleep. Even if he couldn’t have his angel, his Lily, he took comfort in the fact that he did have her in spirit.
