"Good morning baby," Lisa said softly, leaning over her girlfriend's body, trying to wake her up. "Susan," she prodded. "I know you're awake."
The other woman lifted her head off the pillow and stared at Lisa with sleepy eyes. "So what if I am?" she asked, then fell back onto her pillow.
"You have work today. Your first day. Now come on, get up." Tossing her leg over Susan's body, Lisa tried to get her attention.
Susan didn't move for a moment, then suddenly grinned and rolled over, pinning Lisa to the bed. "But wouldn't you rather I stay home with you?" she asked. She smiled before leaning in to capture Lisa's lips softly.
Lisa kissed back for a while, running her hands through Susan's soft hair, before pulling away and sitting up as much as she could on her elbows. "Honey," she began. "Why are you avoiding this? You were so looking forward to this job. We didn't move to America for nothing."
"I know," Susan said with a sigh, rolling off of her girlfriend. "I'm just nervous I guess."
Lisa smiled and reached over into her nightstand drawer, rolling back to Susan a moment later. "Here," she said, holding out a small black box. "Open it."
"Lisa, what is this?" Susan asked, but opened the box anyway. She gasped when it revealed a stunning diamond ring. "Honey," she breathed.
"It was my mum's," Lisa said. "Her engagement ring. I want you to wear it. Think of it as a promise ring. A ring that'll tell all those crazy American boys to stay away from you." Sitting up, she reached over and took the ring from the box with one hand, and took Susan's left in her other. "So. . . will you wear it?"
Susan sat for a moment, biting her lip and looking between the ring and Lisa's face. "Lisa, I don't know. I mean this is a big thing. And it was your mum's. . ."
"Which is exactly why I want you to have it," Lisa said. "Baby, I love you. You know that. And we've been through so much already, I just want you to know that I'm here for you always. Hell, I moved half way across the world with you, for you. We're in this together, aren't we?"
After sitting silently for a moment, Susan nodded and smiled. "Yeah, we are. Of course I'll wear it."
A huge smile spread across Lisa's face as she slipped the ring on Susan's finger, loving their new home and new life together.
