“Daddy! Lites!”
“Yeah,” Neville grinned, picking up his daughter under her arms and swinging her up onto his shoulders. “Pretty, isn’t it?”
The twins’ third Christmas had gotten off to a dodgy start when Neville had decided to decorate the massive tree himself. It was easily twice as tall as he was, so he’d had to use some fairly fine-tuned magic for the upper branches. Switching the lights on had had a significant satisfaction to it, however.
“Tweeee!”
“Nice try. Tree, say tree.”
“Twee!”
He laughed. “Good enough.”
Alice clapped her hands and giggled. “Twee!”
“What d’you reckon, mate?” Neville asked his son, who was staggering around the playpen, dazed by the spectacle. “Is daddy’s tree half as tall again as last year’s, or what?”
“Ba!” Caden insisted. It was his current favourite word, but no one was quite sure what it meant. “Ba!” He sat down with a bump and promptly fell asleep. Neville shook his head.
“Look at him. Not a care in the world. Hey, Al, you want to help put the star up top?”
“Sta!”
“Yeah, you bet.” He picked up his wand and carefully lifted her down from his shoulders. He sat on the armchair and pulled her onto his lap. “Ready?”
She grinned up at him, eagerly. “Sta!”
“Okay.” He closed her little fingers around his wand and then closed his fist over hers. “Right, lift like this… then we do a swish and a flick - Wingardium Leviosa!”
Alice gasped as the huge star zoomed up off the floor and twirled in the air. Neville helped her guide it up to the top of the tree before breaking the spell. “Good, eh?” he said.
“Magic, Daddy!”
“Yeah, well done!”
“Mummy!” Alice exclaimed as her mother came in the room. “Magic!”
“What’s she done now?” Tracey asked, wincing.
“Nothing,” Neville said innocently.
“Nuffing!”
“Do you like our tree?”
“It’s beautiful, dear.”
“Ah, it’s no House Elf work of art, but it’ll do.”
“Speaking of - dinner’s ready.”
“Yeah, okay. Be out in a minute.”
When Tracey had left, Neville gave his daughter a significant look. “Hey. This is our secret, right?”
Her eyes widened. “Magic?”
He nodded. “Yes, but don’t tell Mum, okay?”
“Nuffin!”
“Correct. Right, it’s dinner time!”
“Yum!”
