There are those who say history happens in cycles. This assertion is effectively useless. It does, but no one can see them coming soon enough to do anything about it.
When history is cut up into small enough pieces, maybe there will be something relevant from the mess of things that could be patterned. In certain cases, very few cases, maybe there’s one template that events follow consistently.
Like this one:
At the start of things, there were few enough persons involved that it was easy. Then there were more, so the rules started.
The rules spread out more, and ended up trying to eat everything, so someone, sooner or later, or a group of someones, would disobey the rules so thoroughly that they had to be loosened, if not changed completely.
This can be anything from vaguely administrative to a revolution to an overhaul on how the laws of reality work.
Secure in their new order, those involved relax, and don’t notice as their system stagnates as surely as the other one did.
