This is how it ends:
With the grass smoking and a shriek that’s probably birds scything through the sky, and before that with her leaning over him and smiling slightly as she proves him wrong for the last time. (In any culture, kinslaying is anathema, but they weren’t truly related.)
With her eyes dry and half-burned from the light, and her mouth open but she can’t say a thing with her mind as it is being tamped down from the weight of all the new knowledge falling in. She knows she can’t go back, but the world she left holds no appeal for her anymore.
With the motions that have her taking paper and pen in her hands, and the tongue between her teeth as she pieces together the words to change everything; in her mind all the rules go shattering.
With something that used to be human spitting out blood and smiling through more of it, though the bleeding that she’s doing is another small heresy, and her sentence catching her so surprised that she chokes.
With the girl who’d helped her left alone and half out of time, proud owner of a burnt ruin that was at some point a house and of a mind warped now in ways that humans aren’t supposed to be able to imagine. With her on the ground, broken and dying and denied, rightly, of even the assertion that she’d done the right thing, because she’s done so many things and there are so many directions that the morality of the situation is a great big gray blotch-
