~*~*~*~*

We have to go back, Kate. You hear his words, but you don’t know what they mean. Not instantly, and it takes a while for them to sink, before you understand their true meaning.

Back … He wants to go back; back to the island, back to hell. Back to all this misery, all the pain, all these nightmares, you so successfully managed to escape from, three years ago.
He can’t be serious.
You look up, searching his eyes, and what you see in them scares you.
He is drunk (that is not even a question) and he can’t be serious. He is insane, must be … And, yes, there is this glimmer in his look, transferring the insanity inside of him to the outside. He isn’t serious, can’t be. And yet … you know he is. The longer to look at him, quietly trying to read him, trying to find at least a hint of the man you’ve once loved (never stopped loving), you know he is serious; drunk, maybe, but serious, and everything you can see is the reflection of your past in his dark eyes.

Slowly, you start to shake your head, ready to turn on your heels to leave him and his drunken self alone (this time for good). But then you notice something else in this eyes that, not so long ago, has caught you by surprise, turning your emotional world upside down. Never before had someone looked at you in a way he’s on your first day on the island; right after that plane crash that changed your life completely. Back then, you thought you were lost forever. There was no hope left; nothing that might have proven to you that not giving up was the best thing to do. There was nowhere to run, no place to hide, and once you meet him, the urge to run, to hide vanished with every smile he gave you, with every look you exchanged.
It scared you, and for a long time you tried to fight these feelings that were slowly but constantly growing inside of you. You never wanted this; you never wanted to fall in love. Never again.
But all resistance was futile. He made you fall in love with him. He has this special something about him that makes it impossible for you to turn away from him.
You tried (and you try now). You try to ignore the looks he gives you; the pain his in eyes, the silent begging to come with him. You don’t want to go with him. There is nothing there. You don’t want to return and you don’t want him to return either. For a second, you want to believe that this is all just a joke, that he isn’t serious (or too drunk to mean it). But the determination in his eyes is telling another story, and you feel your heart sink.

Jack … The words are forming quietly on your lips, but no tone escapes your mouth. The way he is looking at you, the desperation in his eyes, in his voice … it is too much for you to handle. You can’t take it anymore. This is too much.
Going back… there is no going back. Going back to where? And why? What is there, that he (you) doesn’t have here?

He is insane, drunk … He doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

You turn around and as you walk back to your car you promise to yourself that this will be the last time, the last goodbye. There will be no going back; not to Jack, not to the island. If he wants to go, you would be the last one to stop him.
But before you’ve opened the car door you already know that you are wrong. You will always be on his side. You will always follow him, no matter where he is going. You are linked to him, forever. And nothing will ever change this; no matter how often you try to lie to yourself, pretend that this link doesn’t exist, that you don’t care about him, that you don’t love him - not anymore.
You do care. You will always love him. And there is nothing you (or anyone else) can ever change this.
