"Happy new year, Scully," he said, placing a gentle kiss on her lips. Scully leaned against Mulder's body, and closing her eyes she realized that this was so different from their first kiss on New Year's Eve almost a lifetime ago.
So much had changed since then; so much pain, tears and sacrifices they'd both made. Sometimes, Scully wondered how it was possible that they were still standing here, watching the fireworks over the mountains.
They were still in hiding, still on the run.
But still alive.
And they were together - stronger and more determined to survive than maybe ever before, and as they both watched the last sparkles vanish in the cold dark night, Scully felt tears running down her cheeks, but it wasn't until Mulder pressed her back against him, whispering words of comfort (and love) in her ear that Scully realized how painful this moment was - for both of them.
"William would've loved this," she said quietly, her voice weak and as broken as her heart was, and when Mulder answered, Scully knew it wasn't only her heart she'd broken by giving William away (to keep him safe and themselves devastated for the rest of their lives).
