He has to do this, he keeps telling himself until it feels right, but when he reaches for the doorbell his hand is shaking.
It feels so wrong, and as the door opens and the little boy, a birthday hat in his hand, shows up besides his mother, it gets even worse.
"Juliet?" she asks, her eyes silently begging for a miracle.
Richards swallows hard. There are no words inside of him to explain. He just shakes his head. But when Rachel stumbles against the doorframe, he steps forward, catching her and holding her close.
"I’m sorry," he whispers, as if it’s his fault; maybe it even is.
