cranberries!!!!

Huzzah and hurrah to cranberry picking! Our marine bio class went out to Northeast Creek yesterday and canoed over to the cranberry bog. Then we muddled our way through the bog and gathered cranberries. It was uber sweet- I love fresh cranberries. However I now need to find a recipe and bake lots of delicious things involving cranberries! Yay to that- our house is amazing for baking. Our kitchen is enormous and so comfortable for the social event of baking.

So the super excitement on campus right now is the International Society for Human Ecology Conference. Chya, the whole damn world of human ecology is here for the next four days to discuss human ecology across all contexts, and since it just so happens to be on my campus, it’s free, and right here!! William McDonough is coming- he’s a super crazy innovative guy who wrote this book called “Cradle to Cradle” We read it for the core course and oh my goodness it boggles your mind with problems and possibilities. It makes you rethink recycling and what that even means; it questions your thoughts on waste materials and where the cycle of waste streams leads us. He pulls apart traditional thought lines and throws out all sorts of ideas for redesigning things- like shoes, how we could redesign shoes to be a product of service and not be down cycled and then what if the materials didn’t give off all sorts of toxic chemicals every time you exerted your weight on them. Ok I digress, but regardless it’ll be sweet to have him here and pick his mind. I’m pretty sure that the whole thing will undeniably be incredible.

Ok on another note of the incredible awesomeness that is COA- we spent all of ACM today discussing the entire operating budget of our college. What other college does that in the medium of the community of students, faculty and staff? I love it; we challenge each other and question where every bit of our investment is and why; then we discussed things like growth as an institution and what that means especially in conjunction with our philosophy and ideals. Ok maybe it doesn’t sound exactly riveting but I still COA it’s follow through in the practice of ideals of self governance and democracy.

Other things that are new and exciting…. It’s really beautiful up here with all the leaves changing and I’m in love with Acadia. It’s getting really really freaking cold up here at night. A bunch of us are hoping to start a peace group on campus so that’s pretty neat. Next semester it looks like I am hopefully taking bio, photography class, and a literature and science class. TAB made us delicious crepes for brunch this morning!

Ok the end- peace and love all
