So, I put up some music for a friend of mine, but why not share it with you guys too? Today's theme is Minorities Up In Arms About Social Justice, and Sometimes About Sex. And I threw in some Mindless Self Indulgence, who are up in arms on general principle, 'cos I told my friend I would.

Latin-influenced rock/hip-hop group I saw at Bonnaroo, and thus began the affair. This song won me over especially. It throws in a Middle Eastern sound, which I'm developing a fetish for.

The Latin rock side. They performed this song at Bonnaroo too. Bonnaroooooo!

Asian Dub Foundation - "Real Great Britain"
UK-based South Asian-influenced dance rock.
Asian Dub Foundation - "New Way, New Life"
I may have YouSendIted this song before, but oh well. It's a great song. "Running through the playground/we could never have known/that in the future/our role models would be home-grown" is one of my favorite lyrics ever.
MIA - "Bucky Done Gun"
So, she's kind of like Gwen Stefani, Missy Elliott, and Peaches, 'cept she's a Sri Lankan refugee (raised in England) and her father is the leader of a Tamil separatist group. Plus, she FINE AS HELL. Like Asian Dub Foundation, she inflects an accent (but sharper) when she sings/raps/I dunno what she does but it's hot, like, this sing-songy rap-chant thing... So a lot of the time no one's quite sure what she's saying and this, combined with her relative newness, makes her lyrics impossible to find on the Internet. I don't know what she's about in this song, but it sounds like she wants to party.

She references the Sri Lankan civil war a lot, like in this song...
MIA - "Sunshowers"
...and especially in this song. This song has the most melodic chorus out of all her songs, which is not saying much, but is fortunately not the point. SHAKE BOOTY, MAN. SHAKE IT.
MIA - "Hombre (Xerox Soundsystem remix)"
The remix doesn't deviate too far from her overall sound, and arguably sounds like an alternate version rather than a remix. Either way, you can shake your ass to it.
Mindless Self Indulgence - "Bitches"
Industrial punk. Punk industrial? I didn't get into them until recently, the story of which is available a few lines down.
Mindless Self Indulgence - "Stupid MF"
The chorus wins at life.
Aggro1 - "Pull Up the Poor Bitches (MIA vs MSI)"
I got into Mindless Self Indulgence because I like MIA, because I found this mash-up. Finally an answer to the eternal question, "What would happen if a sexy Sri Lankan fronted an angry industrial band?"
