It's amazing to see how Serena has changed since coming to live with us. It's similar to the way Opal and even Princess changed when they came to live with us, but with Serena it seems to be happening so fast. I realized the other day that she even looks like a different cat. When she first showed up here, she looked different: her head looked big and square (common symptom of malnutrition in cats), her fur was very coarse, and her build just seemed different. Yes she was long and lean, but her proportions were overall more square. Now she's sleek and muscular. She eats about twice as much as does Opal, but her weight remains consistent. Her fur is ridiculously soft. She's wedge-headed and truly beautiful.
When she showed up here she was not a beautiful cat. Now she's gorgeous. Part of it is her demeanor: she is so relaxed these days. She lies in a sweet puddle on the bed or the couch, she has an alert and intelligent face and she's long and graceful. She is much less frightened, of everything: people and other cats. She loves Opal so much, it's really adorable. She's smart as a whip, too: she watches Opal and mimics what Opal does, like a toddler mimicking an older kid. Like, if Opal goes to lie in a box, Serena will later lie in the same box in the same position. The two also love to wrestle. Sometimes it goes too far and someone gets hurt or upset, usually Serena. We're glad she's accepted Opal as top cat. We do break up the wrestling when it looks severe or when Sereng, na cries.
Just this week she suddenly became unafraid of a person walking past her. I know it seems a small thing, but she's such a 'fraidy cat! Until a week or so ago, she wouldn't lie in the middle of the floor, and no matter where she was lying, she'd get up and prepare to run if a person entered the room. A few weeks ago she started sta.ing put if she was on the sofa and we walked in. Last week she moved to lying in the middle of the floor, but she'd get up and flee if you walked past close to her. Yesterday she was lying in the hallway and I walked past... and she stayed where she was, completely relaxed. Leaps and bounds!
She learns fast and is very smart. She has a habit of swatting or biting R when he is preparing her meals. The other day I was fixing her lunch, and she was very hungry and started to swat at me. She did it once and I told her "No" and she instantly backed off and sat down. Every few seconds she would get up and start to raise her paw, but as soon as I said, "No!" she would instantly sit back down, faster every time.
She really loves R and it's clear that he is her favorite. She loves him to pieces. Yesterday he was petting Opal, and Serena got so jealous that she came over and tried to put her head under his hand. When that didn't work she started licking his hand as he was petting Opal. So jealous! She also has a marked affection for my friend Paul: he was the first person besides us that she went to for petting, and when he comes over she always comes out to greet him and be petted.
Saturday or Sunday I woke up from a nap to find her lying next to me, hugging my face with her paws. I went back to sleep and she continued to hug my face until I woke up again later on.
Today she groomed Opal's face and neck really sweetly, including some head bonks.
I'm glad we can get to know her and change her life for the better.
