It's so warm and sunny today! I love it. I hate the cold and I hate dreary weather. Today I got a good dose of sunshine. They say it might stick around for some days, too! So I went out and did a long-overdue chore: I cleaned out all the small ponds (two half-barrels and a kiddy pool.) Sadly, I didn't find a single fish in any of them; all these ponds are outside the greenhouse and unheated. Last winter many fish made it through; this winter was just too cold. The kiddy pool was positively crawling with fish at the end of last summer :( Poor things. Gambusia are hardy and I really thought they would make it.
I did a lot more than I thought I'd be able to- cleaning all three small ponds was more than I thought I would get done while the daylight lasted. I cleaned a LOT of crud out of them (dead leaves, decayed matter, dead plants) hosed them all out, then washed the remaining live plants, did some root-cutting, and put the plants back into the ponds with new water. I'll let that water sit and warm up tomorrow, then I'll move some gambusia from the big pond into these small ones.
Now my back hurts and I am grubby and quite tired. Oh, and I forgot to eat today, grrr.
