Last night I dreamed I was living in a convent. A small convent, just a few plainclothes monks and nuns in an old house that felt not unlike Dacie's. There was a prison connected in some way to the convent; prisoners came to hang out there. Whenever I take people downtown the first time to meet with the homeless, the thing that they say over and over coming home is "They are just like us. Just like me."
Some of the homeless guys look scary because it's a dangerous, scary life. It helps to be a bit intimidating on the street - but it seems to be largely a survival tactic. When you spend a little time talking to them, you find who the person really is.
