I have come back to this fic a number of times, because it's such a touching portrait of dear Jack. But more than that, isn't it also a sublime way for any of us to live?

Don't we always have something more to give? Shouldn't our lives be measured in what we do for others? And isn't it all more meaningful when you find someone to live for?

Thank you, it means a lot to me that you loved the fic enough to really think about it (and to comment).

it's such a touching portrait of dear Jack. But more than that, isn't it also a sublime way for any of us to live?

This short ficlet was inspired by my recent interest in WWI.
The thing that gets to me the most is the meaninglessnes of these fights in the trenches. Thousands of soldiers are killed for half a kilometer of no mans land, they are dying for no reason!

The lovely thing about putting Jack in this situation is that he will survive, he knows he'll always have a future, which puts everything in a different perspective.
