Immeasurable sadness

There was a falconer and hunter, named Sonjo, who lived in the district called Tamura-no-Go, of the province of Mutsu. One day he went out hunting, and could not find any game. But on his way home, at a place called Akanuma, he perceived a pair of oshidori (mandarin-ducks), swimming together in a river that he was about to cross. To kill oshidori ( Read more... )

that was some good reading and powerful too.

Do you know of any good English translations of Japanese books (or websites to get them) as I've always wanted to read more Japanese literature ^_^

You mean like physical books or e-texts? How are the libraries in your area? I don't know much about American libraries... Lafcadio Hearns writing's, while not technically Japanese literature, I think it's practically Japanese literature. At least his Japan: An Attempt at Interpretation, Kwaidan, and In Ghostly Japan are up on Google Books in full text. If you're interested, here are some of the stories in japanese. Project Gutenberg also has full text on translated Japanese novels. Of course, these are books for which copyright has expired, so they're not exactly contemporary.

I use this Japan Foundation translation search with relative frequency. Also, since I'm being a bit stupid and having trouble understanding your question (making simple things complicated is what I excel at), this site on Japanese lit by Mark Jewel at Waseda which I only recently discovered is a really good source of information. If you don't really have an idea on who exactly you'd like to read stuff from, that site is definitely a help ( ... )

lol sorry, should have specified format. I'm mostly looking for hard copy texts, reading on computer's gives me huge headache, and I don't have an actual e-reader to help.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I hear you, reading on the screen is a pain in the ass. Also, if you want to give me an idea on what you usually like to read (e.g. genre, fave authors) I can maybe give you some more tailored recs. For one, my sister actually is a connoisseur of Japanese literature.
