The more time you spend around them, the more funny things you see! And also, the more confident they become in your presence, which is very rewarding and leads to even more funny things.
Oh, just hobby, definitely! The three breeding-age females are actually owned by my mother, and the rest are kind of a motley crew.
A couple of years ago I bought some vacant land across the street from my house (mostly to stop anyone else buying it and doing something I didn't like with it!), and then had to figure out what to do with it. Mom and I decided to get a few alpacas as a joint venture. You'd have to be pretty lucky as a small breeding operation to be able to actually make any money from it, though. At this stage they're just expensive, entertaining lawnmowers.
For a while it didn't seem to be going anywhere, and then suddenly it all fell into place. I'm more confident now about having another go with the older ones.
I thought you might like the picture of Sherry frowning!
(I have trouble taking pictures of the ones with dark faces - Zareena the llama and Nabil the black alpaca. I guess it's just much more important with those ones to make sure the sun's in the right place. I keep taking what I think will be good pictures of Zareena, only to find her head is just a dark shape with no features.)

Are alpacas your profession, your hobby, or both?
