Chapter 2 Subway Silence
He opened the door.
The bell jingled telling he entered.
“irasshaimase.”
Kame looked around. Even though it had looked quite shady from the outside, inside it was everything but shady. The little bar had a nice warm feeling. Candles on the few tables had been lit, giving a soft glow to the warm yellow painted walls. On the walls were picture frames filled with photos of people he didn’t know. They were all Japanese and Kame was sure they weren’t idols. He looked to the small bar. A man, probably his age, was standing behind it, drying off glasses. The man looked up and smiled at him. “Have a seat.” The smile was filled with warmth and heated Kame’s once cold body. Kame took a seat at one of the tables and looked around some more. Wooden beams were supporting the roof. They were a dark brown while the ceiling was a yellow-ish white. On a few of the pictures, he had noticed, was the man standing with other people. ‘Friends’ He figured. He wondered why these picture frames were on the walls. Suddenly someone was standing beside him. It was the same man who was drying the glasses just a while ago behind the bar. The man handed him a towel and Kame smiled in appreciation. “Thanks..” He whispered and dried himself off. Suddenly his stomach was rumbling loudly and Kame blushed embarrassedly. The man walked through the door quickly an left Kame’s sight. ‘It seemed like he hadn’t heard it.’ Kame thought. “Yokatta..” He whispered, it would’ve been quite embarrassing. He wondered what was behind the door. A secret room? His living room? A kitchen. Maybe a room where he stores the liquor? Or maybe a room where he keeps dead bodies? It was a shady neighbourhood after all. Kame shook his head. He shouldn’t be thinking like that. This place was nice itdidn’t look shady at all. The man seemed normal as well.
After a while the man came back and placed a plate filled with rice and curry in front of him. Kame looked up and the man smiled. “Some leftovers from my dinner I thought you would like some.. I heated it up for you..” Kame beamed at him, grateful for the food the other man gave him. “Thank you…” He whispered. He started to eat his food quickly at first but it was spicy so he slowed down. The last bite. He put in his mouth and stared to chew, savouring the nice spicy taste of the curry. He swallowed. The man, the bartender and probably the only employee there was which probably meant he was the owner as well, was by his side again. Kame looked up once again. “Delicious..” He said. The man just smiled again, ‘A pretty smile’ Kame thought, and walked through the same door again with the empty plate. “Probably a kitchen..” Kame whispered.
At the same time the bartender came back the door swung open and the doorbell jingled. A slightly little man entered the building. “Hey Pi..” He said in a low, but pretty, voice. “Aah Ryo.. You’re here..” The bartender smiled at the man. Kame looked at how both of them interacted. ‘A customer? no.. by the looks of it.. he is a friend.’ “Seems like you have a new customer.” The bartender, Pi?, just smiled. Kame wondered where he had seen the new man from before. He was kinda familiar. “Here bring this to him will ya..” The bartender said to his friend and Ryo, Kame remembered he was called Ryo, scoffed. “Hey I’m a customer you know not your employee.” “Just do it for me..?” Pi said with a pout. Kame really wondered what his real name was. Who would call somebody Pi? Ryo took the beer and walked towards Kame. “But I..” Kame started but was cut off by Pi. “Everyone likes a beer after curry.” Kame just nodded his thanks and took a large sip. He didn’t drink much but it was true, a beer after curry was nice. The bitter fluid washed away the spices in his mouth and it cooled down his mouth. “Aah..” He sighed after swallowing and took another sip of his beer.
Ryo had walked back and chit chatted with the bartender, who was again drying some glasses. Kame looked at the glasses, the slow movements the man his age made with his delicate soft hands. The glasses were getting really shiny, Kame noticed. He looked at the friend. And suddenly he knew where he saw him before. He turned his head to the wall and looked at the picture. Two men arm in arm, both with a big smile on their face. It was summer, it seemed. The sun was shining and they both had shirts and shorts on. The left man, Kame had known from the start, was the bartender. The man to the right, he knew now, was Ryo. They looked quite a bit younger so they’ve probably known each other for a while. He turned back to the pair and found the two man smiling at him. When had they stopped talking. “Yeah that’s me..” Ryo said. He had an accent. Osaka? Ryo turned to Pi and poked him. “Not much of a talker is he?” The bartenders friend laughed and hit his friend softly on his shoulder. “I gotta go.. See ya later Pi..” Pi waved him goodbye.
Not long after the friend left Kame stood up walked to the bar and looked at the young man. “Could I make a phonecall please?” “Sure..” The bartender said. There was a phone standing on the counter of the bar and the brown haired gave him the horn. He called a cab. He asked the bartender the address of this bar and told it to the one answering the phone. A cab would arrive in 5 minutes. He hung up and smiled. “Thanks.” “No problem…” “How much do I owe you?” Kame asked while taking his wallet out of his pocket. “It’s on the house..” Pi said and smiled. Kame blushed a little bit. “Thanks..” The bartender shook his head, chuckling. Kame walked towards the door.
Suddenly he turned around before walking out of the door.
“Kamenshi Kazuya..” He said. The other man, still watching him, smiled.
“Yamashita Tomohisa.”
