Yep. It's pretty mindboggling, the whole one-drop thing. IME, no one blinks at my Lumbee great-grandmother, but the eighth-and-change black ancestry *always* provokes commentary and interest (to the point of being offensive) from white people. I'd never be considered NDN, but to those people, I am suddenly Incognegro. And it is *never* an issue with POC, in part because they usually can tell, and it's just...not a big deal to them.
Given that now you're hearing (white) people say, "Why is everyone calling Obama black? He's half-white, so why are people calling him blaaaack?" I wish people really understood how wacky and inconsistent and hypocritical and racist the US is about this.
