I remember being 11. 5th and 6th grade are the primary reasons I'm not sending my kids to school. (With 4th grade coming up second.) I was never suicidal, but I was miserable, and I'm not sure there ever was anything anyone could do about it. (I switched schools a few times, which eventually worked.)
Playground insults are some of the stupidest shit. I mean, they didn't call the kid gay because he was gay, they called him that just because it was an insult. Hell, they used to call me 'fat', not because I was fat, but because it was an insult. (No wonder so many girls end up with fucked up self-images. Forget TV; if you're getting called 'fat' every day on the school playground, sooner or later you might believe it.)
"When a child dies, the universe screams." This is a terrible tragedy, and my heart goes out to his family and friends. And as for the rest of the story, I'm too bitter and angry to say anything polite, so I'll shut up now.
