17

On Friday they go to the mall together with Sungjong and pretend there is nothing wrong.

Sungyeol has to stop himself a few times from slapping both Sungjong and Myungsoo and demanding to know what’s going on, but they seem to look like there’s nothing wrong, fighting about what color suits Sungjong’s complexion best.

Myungsoo says black suits everybody and Sungjong snaps at him that he’s colorblind, and to make sure Myungsoo doesn’t say anything back he also adds in that plaid shirts aren’t the holy epitome of fashion, in case Myungsoo didn’t notice.

When he finally finds a shirt he likes, he starts to whine because he doesn’t have enough money for it, and he makes a face, aiming his big eyes at the two of them.

Sungyeol succumbs first into loaning him the money, but apperntly it’s not enough because it’s a designer label, so Myungsoo has to loan a bit as well.

But the moment he has it in a shiny shopping bag, he decides he has to go home because he promised to visit Dongwoo-Hyung later.

“Totally just used us.” Myungsoo says after his departure.

“Well, what did you expect? We’re his hyungs.”

“Is that how you’re going to raise your kids? Just spoil them with everything they want?”

“Unless you’re going to fart a baby for us-“

“Or, you’ll lay eggs… with little baby tadpoles…!” Myungsoo’s eyes glint with wild epiphany and he sounds excited; “There’s going to be lots and lots of them, swimming around the bathtub-“

“Urgh, Myungsoo! You just have to be so disgusting!” Despite what he says, he’s half-laughing.

“You’re the one who started this conversation, dumb-ass.”

“Bastard.”

“Idiot.”

“Jerk.” He pushes Myungsoo out of spite.

Myungsoo still continues talking about their baby tadpoles and how he’ll look after them, and feed them although Sungyeol asks him a few times to stop being such an asshole. He sounds like a kid asking his mother for a pet.

“… and then when they’ll grow up, they’ll have cheeks just like yours.” Myungsoo stops talking, satisfied that Sungyeol didn’t interrupted him, and then notices that Sungyeol stopped on his tracks.

“What’s wrong?”

“Somebody bought the infinity necklace.” Sungyeol stares at the now empty spot on the display window in the shop.

There are two other necklaces filling the space where it had once been.

“Oh. You really liked it, didn’t you?”

Sungyeol nods, shoulders slumped.

“Hmm. Could’ve been a nice inheritance to one of our tadpoles.”

Sungyeol give him the worst glare he could master, and Myungsoo laughs.

He buys them both French Crape with the few pennies he got left with whipped cream and strawberries and syrup (he picks all the ingredients because Myungsoo just shrugs).

At first Myungsoo looks like he’s fine, but then his face gets twisted and he looks as if the sweet pastry is trying to murder him. Sungyeol just finishes his own when Myungsoo hands him his. “Ugh, it’s too sweet.”

“Are you for real?” Sungyeol gladly takes it and eats it, although it looks a little abused.

The mall is busy with people. They’re sitting at some benches near by the fashion stores. Some fake greenery hides them from the world, but every now and then someone passes by.

It’s a really famous make-out spot, because once evening settles, you could see most of the shops across the plaza lighted and sparkling - but since it’s morning, the place is completely abandoned.

“Either you have no taste buds, either you’re plain stupid. I’m not giving it back.”

“You paid for it, so I don’t care.”

Sungyeol makes a face at him, and Myungsoo smiles.

“So.”

“So?”

“How is my money doing, by the way? I didn’t hear news from it for a long time.”

“It’s hanging. It saw better days, of course. Think how hard he’s been suffering to know that it’d been deduced to 1,225,000.”

Sungyeol feels a little weird joking about it, since they’ve been avoiding the topic.

Maybe they really should talk about it, figure out where they go from here.

“Hey, how come it’s still deduced? I’ve been doing my fair share of the bargain.” Myungsoo snaps him out of his thoughts.

“Well, I don’t know… I might still need some convincing.” He means it as a joke, but Myungsoo takes the bait. He arches his eyebrow; “What kind of convincing do you have in mind?”

“What kind of convincing are you offering?”

Myungsoo leans a little bit to him. “I really like… your shoes.” Although he’s staring at his lips.

Sungyeol licks his lips from the whipped cream. “Yeah? Well, I like your pants. They look… tight.” He makes sure the word ‘tight’ comes out a little breathy.

“Kiss me.”

Albeit in a crowded Friday mall, Sungyeol doesn’t need to be told twice. The kiss is shy and light. It lasts sole seconds before Sungyeol pulls away. “Here, though?” He asks, implying on the fact that they’re in public.

Myungsoo rubs their noses and pecks his mouth again. “Don’t look - but Woohyun is right behind you.”

“Yeah?” Sungyeol returns a peck.

He waited for a normal make-out session for a few days now, because Myungsoo had a part-time job for two days in a row.

Myungsoo leaves a trail of kisses on his jaw before landing on his lips again. Sungyeol clutches to his shirt.

“He probably passed us by now… do you see him?”

“Yeah, I see him.” His eyes are closed and he cares rat’s ass about Woohyun showing up, because Myungsoo’s hand sneaks on his waist. “We should probably go to your house then, in case he follows us.” Sungyeol suggests.

“Yeah,” Myungsoo has dimples when he smiles. “Let’s go.”

When they come to Myungsoo, they decide to watch a movie on his laptop.

It’s pretty interesting, but Sungyeol is strained to pay attention, because they’re both on Myungsoo’s bed and their shoulders brush, and Myungsoo’s leg sometimes touches his own.

He gets all hot and bothered, and shifts his position every now and then.

Myungsoo stops the movie.

“What?” Sungyeol asks.

“You’re fidgeting.”

“Am I?” He feigns innocence.

“Sungyeol, if you want to make-out, just say so.”

“Who said I wanted to make-out?”

“Right.”

Ugh, Sungyeol hates it when he gets so smug.

“Maybe I’m just uncomfortable.” He continues, and slumps back a little, so he could prod his hand between Myungsoo’s back and the headboard of the bed. He puts his head on Myungsoo’s chest, and rubs his chin on a hard spot.

“Alright,” He puts his gentle fingers through Sungyeol’s nape and to his hair. “Let’s get back to the movie, then.”

“Okay.”

Who the hell cares about the stupid movie? Stupid Myungsoo who can’t take a hint!

Sungyeol moves his leg on top of Myungsoo’s, then proceeds to nudge his legs opened a little so he could put his own leg between them. He sniffs Myungsoo’s neck for a whiff of his cologne, and sneaks his hand underneath Myungsoo’s shirt.

Myungsoo hums into his hair and ghosts his fingers on Sungyeol’s back.

“Hey,” he whispers. “Can I give you a hickey?” He whispers.

“Did you even notice that I stopped the movie again?”

Sungyeol pushes the portable computer out of Myungsoo’s lap as he crawls on top of him. “What movie?” he asks.

When Myungsoo wants to make out, something about him changes, kind of like he swings into a more passionate mood. His eyes focus completely on him, and he pretends nothing else exists - he ignores his phone or any knocking on the door. His gaze feels a little desperate, as if they don’t have much time. Sungyeol really likes how his eyes are misted with lust, and how he licks his lips and keeps them parted.

“I want to do more than practice,” He says suddenly, hand rising to caress Sungyeol’s jaw, “And I don’t know if I can control myself. You’re driving me insane.”

“I want to do more than practice, too.” Sungyeol confesses. “But I don’t really know how.”

Myungsoo licks his lips again. “I can show you.”

Sungyeol suddenly feels an excited panic rush through his body.

Myungsoo pulls him down, and they kiss gently.

He flips him over in the middle of the kiss, so he’ll be on top, and stares at him from above.

Sungyeol feels that he’s completely at his mercy, and that kind of excites him.

If before he was scared shitless, now he wants it, and he wants it so bad he can hardly contain himself.

“Just like that, though…? Don’t you want it to be special?”

Sungyeol slaps his chest. “Why do you have to ruin everything with your weirdness? Am I a girl? Where is all this romance coming out of, huh?” Sungyeol argues, angry somewhat.

Myungsoo laughs.

“Killing the mood with your romance! Who heard of that? Completely absurd. You know, a normal teenager would’ve jumped on the opportunity, instead of opening a conversation about our feelings. Christ.” Sungyeol continues.

“Alright, alright. How about we set a date? It’s going to be our anniversary next week.”

“Dude, you seriously count days, don’t you? You’re the one who should be the girl.”

“You should consider your position, right now…” He refers to the fact that Sungyeol is under him.

Sungyeol still feels frustrated, and his face probably gives him away, so Myungsoo leans down to place a kiss on his forehead.

His lips slide to Sungyeol’s temple and from there to his cheek, and jaw and chin, and then they rise to meet Sungyeol’s lips.

“I’m going to post an update that my boyfriend can’t satisfy me.” He continues to grumble, unfazed by the intimate gesture.

“You do that, and I’ll post an update with how much money you’re paying me to satisfy you.” He snorts, and reaches his hand to stroke Sungyeol’s hair and cheek. He rubs Sungyeol’s nose with his own, and collects him in his arms.

Sungyeol feels so safe and comforted that he just closes his eyes, and when he opens them, it’s already evening, and Myungsoo is rubbing his nose on his neck.

They fall asleep.

He raises his head a little in panic. How could he just blackout like that?

“You’re up…?” Myungsoo’s voice is drowsy and deep, just like it usually is on the phone and Sungyeol simply loves the sound of it.

He feels lazy, all of the sudden, even if Myungsoo is a bit heavy on top of him, so he just pushes his own face into Myungsoo’s neck.

“Hmmm,” Sungyeol confirms.

“You should head back home, it’s probably late.”

“Not too late,”

Myungsoo snickers in his ear. They cuddle a little, rubbing cheeks together, and just when Sungyeol is about to fall back into a dreamful, sweet sleep, his phone rings.

Myungsoo rubs his nose on Sungyeol’s neck before nipping it.

“Just ignore it, unless it’s my mom. Then I should probably not ignore it.” Sungyeol whispers.

Myungsoo chuckles before reaching up and fishing the stupid galaxy-note from the stand.

“It’s Woohyun.”

“Who cares, Myungsoo?” Sungyeol pushes the hand that holds the phone as far away from him as possible. “You were kissing my neck, remember? Let’s get back to that.”

“What if it’s urgent? It probably took him a humongous amount of courage to call. You have to answer.”

“Unless he gotten himself accidentally pregnant with tadpoles, which is anatomically impossible but will make me piss my pants with laughter, I don’t want to hear it.”

“But tadpoles is something special only to us,” Myungsoo sounds a little offended. “Because you’re a frog and Woohyun is like… well… a jar of grease. He can’t produce tadpoles.”

“I’m never going to hear the end of the tadpoles, am I?”

“Why aren’t you as excited as me to build a large family together? Like, we could have over 1000 kids!”

“There is no way I’m going to agree to take care a thousand of them!”

“How about 500, then?”

“Myungsoo!”

“Well, what? While you were sleeping I found out that a regular frog spawn is approximately 2000 eggs at once! My bathtub isn’t even big enough, so we’ll have to use yours.”

“You actually went online and searched it, didn’t you? You’re such an ass.”

“I’m going to be a responsible father to all of them. I’ll feed them planktons and play with them. And wash them behind their ears.”

“Frogs don’t have ears.”

“You have ears.”

Sungyeol shoves Myungsoo from on top of him, and Myungsoo laughs and plants a kiss on his lips.

Sungyeol puffs his cheeks to show that he’s not in the mood.

“Come on,” His boyfriend says; “I’ll take you to the metro station.”

On Sunday evening Hoya drags him by Sungyeol’s ear to his house, and they finish their stupid physics project, because they didn’t even got started on it except where Sunggyu helped that day in the library.

It looks like gibberish to both of them, but they have to get at least something done, since the due date is on the next day.

The only thing that helps is calling their Hyungs and asking them stupid questions about the material. At one point, Woohyun tells them off because they should’ve done it earlier, so they only call Dongwoo - but in the end he and Hoya start talking about irrelevant things and Sungyeol gets preoccupied with texting Myungsoo. Figures Dongwoo forgot most of it by now, so they call Sunggyu, and after a few calls Woohyun answers and yells at them for being irresponsible and hangs up. This probably means they were together all along and Sungyeol and Hoya were interrupting them.

They somehow stumble through it until 2 am, but at least it’s done.

Sungyeol barely makes it home by 2 and a half.

Myungsoo went to sleep, way, way earlier, so instead of calling him, he pretends that he’s not being lame re-reading all their past conversations to fall asleep.

When he meets Hoya by the locker the next morning, he looks identically tired.

He doesn’t know how he ends up in the cafeteria, with a sandwich in his hand.

It’s like someone erased two hours out of his memory. He doesn’t even remember what lessons he had, or where Hoya went to.

There’s only Dongwoo and Myungsoo present.

“Are you sick?” Dongwoo looks concerned.

“I’m fine. Worked on a project with Hoya till late.”

“Yeah… I noticed that Hoya didn’t look good as well. He was groaning instead of talking in the morning, and I found it a bit weird.” Dongwoo confesses.

Myungsoo strokes Sungyeol’s back gently, as if to comfort him, and gives him a look full of pity.

“Poor you, didn’t study all semester long because the arcade down the road was opened-“

“The arcade? It’s you dragged me to your house every day.”

“I knew this will turn out to be my fault. It’s always my fault. I made you study, though, didn’t I? It’s not my fault you liked to stare at the back of my head.”

“It just happens that I find your nape attractive…! And that’s not something I can say about your personality!” Sungyeol defends.

Dongwoo can’t even swallow the food in his mouth from all the laughter, but just then, Sungjong lands his tray against Dongwoo’s, shocked and wide-eyed.

“You guys won’t believe this!” He says, a little out of breath. “I was sitting with Sunggyu, Woohyun and Hoya in the yard,” He starts.

Oh, that’s right, they’re not here.

He was wondering where they are.

“Then they kind of volunteered me to go buy them drinks,” he sounds a little bitter, “But then I come back, and Sunggyu and Woohyun are fighting! Hoya had to separate them because they were literally breaking each other’s faces. I just left Hoya with them in the infirmary wing-“

Dongwoo stands up abruptly.

They all look up to him, and he suddenly feels sheepish, and rubs his head. “I, uh, need to go check up on them.”

When Sungyeol watches him go out of the cafeteria in a quick stride, he recognizes that reaction.

This is exactly how he acted when Woohyun sent him that text-message about breaking up with Sunggyu. A certain rush to see if he’s okay, and to offer comfort him if he’s crying.

It does not surprise him that he feels some kind of emptiness now.

Woohyun is an asshole, and Sungyeol isn’t so sure he deserves any condolences right now. He probably deserved it.

Woohyun is a big boy, and he can handle himself.

He’ll call him in the evening. Ask him how he is.

“This is your perfect chance, Sungyeol.” Myungsoo nudges him, looking stern.

“What for?”

“Go make up with him.” Myungsoo tugs at his sleeve.

“It’s probably something silly-”

“You’re being silly. He’s your friend.”

Stupid Myungsoo gnawing at his insides. Sungyeol stays stubborn.

“We’ll go together, later, if you want.” He won’t be going later, too, though.

He knows it’s mean of him.

Woohyun probably needs his best friend right now. But Sungyeol isn’t sure if they qualify as best friends anymore.

He might have put down a good front at first, but Myungsoo kept tugging at his conscience.

At some point he felt kind of bad about the whole deal, as if he had lowered himself to Woohyun’s level, trying to prove him something he wasn’t entirely sure what.

If this whole ‘buying-a-boyfriend’ seemed silly to him lately, leaving Woohyun alone in the infirmary wing without so much as checking if he’s alright seemed cruel.

But it’s Myungsoo’s fault, because although Sungyeol refused to accompany him, he went to check on both Sunggyu and Woohyun without him, bringing the both of them a can of coffee before recess was over.

To make things worse, once school is over, Woohyun is waiting for him by the entrance to the parking lot. It’s where he usually waited for him when the two of them went home together.

Although nothing seems out of place, his lip is split, and his chin is bandaged. Sungyeol wonders if he got suspended. There’s dried blood on his shirt, and although not sure if Sunggyu’s or Woohyun’s, it still makes the pity stir in his heart.

He gnaws at his lower lip when he comes closer.

But Woohyun doesn’t look like he’s here for apologies. He pushes at his shoulder, eyebrows furrowed.

“Are you satisfied? Is this what you wanted?” He looks so full of contempt, as if he can burst open with it. “Some friend you are.”

Sungyeol’s pity immediately turns into anger. “Why? What did I ever do to you?! Did I leave you for another man? Am I the one who beat you up?” If he wanted it to turn it to Sungyeol’s fault, he has another thing coming.

“Don’t mat Sunggyu into this!” Woohyun’s yell echoes in the empty parking-lot.

Sungyeol had late classes, so the sun is coming down slowly in the horizon, casting a sickly bright orange glow on the few cars and on their faces. He had probably waited for him all this time just to start a fight.

“All he ever does is to protect you - the two of you, for that matter - like you’re some holy martyrs, and I’m the bad guy, so don’t you dare to say anything bad about him!”

Sungyeol wasn’t going to say anything bad about Sunggyu anyway, but it shocks him that despite the fact that Sunggyu hurt his precious face, Woohyun still cares about him enough to defend him.

That doesn’t sound like the selfish Woohyun who only looked up after himself, leaving a burning trail for Sungyeol and Hoya to follow.

“And to make it worse, he promised, he promised me he won’t go back to his old ways, and the moment he hears about Sungjong’s injuries…” Woohyun trails off and looks away sharply.

Sungyeol isn’t sure he follows. What old ways? Sunggyu’s old friends?

Maybe this is why Sungjong didn’t want Sunggyu to know anything although he told Woohyun. Maybe it was Sungyeol who should’ve kept quiet that day in the hallway with Sunggyu and Sungjong.

Is that why they fought?

He suddenly feels a little guilty.

“All I ever did was try my best to protect you, and you come and spit in my face like I’m not even worth your time-“

“Protect me? By destroying my relationship with Myungsoo?!”

“What did you expect me to do?! You don’t even know who he is!”

“Not this again, Woohyun! I didn’t tell you to go be best buddies with Myungsoo, but the least you could do is show some god damn respect! The same respect you want me to have for Sunggyu!”

Woohyun purses his lips in anger, looking away stubbornly.

Screw Woohyun and his stupid tantrums.

Sungyeol slings his bag on his back, and marches down the parking lot. He doesn’t make it very far.

“Alright! I’m jealous!” Woohyun yells after him, and Sungyeol freezes in place. “Is that what you wanted to hear?! I’m jealous!”

It is, but Sungyeol doesn’t want to hear it anymore. He clutches onto the strap of his bag. He’s not serious, is he?

“I’ve always been your number one, so yeah; it’s a little frustrating that I’m not anymore.” He sniffs somewhere behind him, and Sungyeol turns back to him. “And it’s frustrating, that suddenly this guy comes out of nowhere and steals you from me. And you look at him with the same adoring eyes that you looked at me. And worse part is that you two look so perfect together; you’re both tall and handsome and stylish and happy, like models in a magazine. How can I even compete with that? Me and Sunggyu, we’ll never be able to look…” He trails off again, nose red, and lower lip puffy. And Sungyeol feels like laughing, because that’s exactly what he feels about him and Sunggyu.

“I know I’m selfish. But that’s just how I am. I should have accepted Myungsoo from the start, but I was so terrified, so completely petrified that something might happen to you and I won’t be there. I was scared that I might not be a part of your life anymore. That you’ll exclude me, put me in a place where I can’t reach you. Because in my head you’re still a really tall snotty little brat, who was scared from big dogs and had girly long hair - that’s my Sungyeol. But you’re not mine anymore, and I understand that now.”

Sungyeol doesn’t know what to say yet, so he sighs.

Woohyun continues; “I didn’t thought you’d take this kissing thing so seriously. Hoya and I did it all the time back when we were in junior high.”

“What?!”

“I’m kidding.” Woohyun snorts, and then bursts into laughter through his tear-filled cheeks; “Just once or twice.”

“Are you serious?”

“No.” and Sungyeol feels like laughing with him, because he really missed that stupid black humor.

“I’m sorry. For being such an asshole. I’m a jerk, okay? I know. I seriously don’t deserve you guys as my friends. Especially you, Sungyeol. You and me used to inseparable, and I don’t know, I guess it felt normal if we’d just kiss here and there - don’t make that face at me, alright? I said I was sorry - I didn’t mean to hurt you like that. I didn’t even imagine you might like me.”

Sungyeol feels like a stone lifted from his chest. It was a pretty heavy stone, because suddenly, he finds that he can breathe easily.

“Finally,” he says, more to himself, but Woohyun hears him. “Was that so hard? To say you’re sorry?”

“Pretty much, yeah.” Woohyun wipes his nose.

“Your ego is bigger than planet earth.”

“Bigger than the universe.” Woohyun says back and hugs him.

It’s super awkward, and they’re standing alone in a parking lot, and Sungyeol suddenly misses Woohyun, just there by his side, with his silly jokes and dumb ideas, and hugs him back.

“Doesn’t mean I forgive you yet. Now stop being such a girl. People can see.”

“You’re openly gay, and hugging in public scares you.” Woohyun laughs.

“This might find its way to Myungsoo. He doesn’t look like the jealous types, but he really makes such scenes… even forbade me from watching porn because that’s cheating.”

Woohyun wipes his face, before looking into his eyes. “So you’re really together.”

“Yeah, we’re really together. Myungsoo even considers adopting.”

“Adopting?” Woohyun looks a little serious. “As in adopting a kid?”

“Yeah. We even picked a name for him. We’ll call him Mookyullie.”

“Aren’t you  too young to think of that stuff?”

Sungyeol laughs. “He took me to a pet-shop in the mall and pointed to a tank full of tadpoles and then stared at it for half an hour, trying to detect which one looks like me.”

Woohyun looks horrified. “That’s… somewhat insulting.”

“That’s fine; I bought him a plastic tiara last week, and told him that we’re not going to make out until he wears it.”

It’s the first time they go home together in what feels like forever.

He feels so happy that they finally back to being friends (well, almost), that he doesn’t mind skipping all the studying he should do for his final in two days (not that he was planning to study anyway).

They come to Woohyun’s house, and open his dad’s expensive collection of wines and get pissed drunk, because Woohyun says that he needs to get Sunggyu out of his system.

In the end it turns into a pity party, where Woohyun, while crying, slurs about love and stars and infinity and that he can’t live without Sunggyu.

Myungsoo calls right when they open their fourth bottle.

“Hey!” Sungyeol yells because Woohyun turned up the music so loud that the bed is rattling.

He’s so lucky his parents are out, or he would’ve been grounded for months by now.

“Hi…” He can barely hear what Myungsoo is saying next, so he exits the room.

“Sorry, what was that?”

There’s silence for a few long seconds. “I asked where are you at.”

“Woohyun’s house. He’s a mess. I think we drank too much.”

“Yeah?”

“Umm. How is our anniversary planning going?” He asks seductively into the phone, though his voice comes out a little girlish and he blames it on the alcohol.

Myungsoo snorts and doesn’t answer.

“Hello?” Sungyeol teases, “Are you still there, my princess?”

“Yeah, I’m here.”

“So why did you call?”

“Just… wanted to hear your voice.”

“You know, Myungsoo… you seriously kill me when you say that stuff.” It seems like such a good idea to tell him; “I really love you. Like, seriously, love you. Like I never loved anyone ever before like I love you. Ever.”

“You’re drunk.” Myungsoo argues as if it cancels all Sungyeol’s previous statements.

“Yeah, but I love you.” Sungyeol feels so giddy when he says that, leaning on the banister in the hallway until he almost falls down.

Then Woohyun comes out of the room in his boxers and starts down the stairs; “Oh, have to go, Myungsoo… I think he’s going to run around the neighborhood naked! I’ll call you when I’m less sober. I mean… less sober. Less… drunk. Yes.”

He hangs up before he hears Myungsoo reply.
