Artwork of The Princess and the Frog + Some Future Disney Works

Feb 27, 2009 20:55

I've been meaning to do a new post on upcoming movies for '09 since... January, but never got around to it. Today, after browsing through tons of shorts online, I was suddenly re-inspired to make my list. But as I was looking through my little collection for the upcoming movie, The Princess and the Frog, I realized I had... quite a bit of material. So I think the smart thing to do is to divide my post up, or rather, dedicate this post to Frog.

There seems to have been a lot of controversy over the so called racial implications, etc. for the first black Disney princess. But I don't really care, personally I think there's always going to be somebody unhappy with other people's artwork. I'm just happy Disney's reconnecting with their 2D roots (which I've been mourning over since they shut down their 2D studio back in 2004. Especially since they left it off miserably with Home on the Range.)

This movie looks like it's going to be beautiful, and considering the stakes, I really hope it'll be a success.

Let's start off with some character designs.

Awww, Disney artists do chibis too. <3

I imagine they're trying to figure out the way her hair will look.

I absolutely, love, love, love! The way she looks here. She's so cute and country smart!

I love that they're doing 1920's New Orleans. It's may favorite time period only equal to the Victorian era. I mean, check out the flapper girl style in that last one!

Here's some gorgeous concept art.

Some promotional images.

This one's a screen cap from the teaser:

And to cap it all off let's take a look at what appears to be screen caps from the movie itself:

Perhaps the frog is cheering her up after some incident by trying to seduce the lady? Haha.

Sorta brings to mind the Ariel and Sabastian scene too, doesn't it?

I think a lot of people will be confused that this isn't "The Frog Prince"; the title is a sort of misleading. It wasn't originally called The Princess and the Frog; it was called, "The Frog Princess." (But then again, that might still confuse people.) It was changed because... people got rowdy and said it was racist?
Now, I don't know if the Disney version follows the story of the original tale of the same name: The story of frog who helps a prince through several tasks, and is eventually revealed to be a princess.
But it would be interesting if from what we've seen of the images if Princess Tiana is trying to come to terms with herself and her secret... At least that's how I've interpreted it. Watch me be totally off base. XD
And so I was! It's definitly based off the Frog Prince more.

I'll be following up this entry with my post on upcoming films this year, but since Rapunzel and The Bear and the Bow (Pixar) won't be in theaters at least until next year, I'll post what I do have on them as an extra bonus.
Rapunzel concept art can now be viewed here.

Concept designs for the Bear and the Bow. I love it when Pixar animates human characters. I can't wait to see them in the final product!

For those of you who don't know what The Bear and the Bow is about, here:

EDIT 4/09*: Some more Princess and the Frog pics, these were given to Aint it Cool News:

What's this, what's this? Eh, perhaps my theory might be correct!

The above is a witch doctor I think? You know, it's really funny, I really used to be into that voodoo and supernatural things when I was little. I even had those worry dolls and gave one to my best friend and her brothers if I remember correctly...
And here's the villian:
