I'm starting a new thing, I guess. Because sometimes I have a lot to say about the stories I write, but at the same time, I'd really rather not clutter the page with the actual story on it. So I'll be posting any and all author's notes seperately and on my journal instead of over at alembiczenith. Here we go with the first, for Insert Obligatory Closteted Gay Joke Here which is original fiction.
This is a shorter piece (though, truth be told, one of my longer ones) set within a novel I plan to write. Eventually.
The novel itself takes place in my hometown (Santa Cruz, California) which is something of a big deal for me, as I have never really considered, well, writing what I know. I think, in a sense, tha main character, Ethan Booke, is largely based on myself. Of course, there are plenty of ways in which we differ. Were I writing about myself, I would write about myself.
So, just like me, Ethan is a FtM transperson, formerly known as Kate. I cannot say transsexual, as he has not fully undergone surgery yet, but is passing as male, unlike me. He is also college-aged, and a paranormal dectective. This is where things get weird, I suppose. I haven't yet decided if the novel will feature multiple cases or just one. Because I am absolute rubbish at figuring out plot, I don't even know what the cases would even be. The point being, weird shit goes down, Ethan figures out what's happening and why it's happening and, usually, who's doing it. Still, just because he knows what's going on, doesn't mean he can stop it. Which is where Tom comes in. Tom hunts ghosts. He is also Asian, which came as a surprise to me. The features just showed up as I was sketching the character.
Ian is Ethan's best friend. They've been friends for maybe thirteen of their twenty-two years, so Ian has known Ethan since he was Kate. In this story, Insert Obligatory Closeted Gay Joke Here, Ian and Tom are waiting around for a spirit to show.
And I believe that is all the explanation needed.
