LJ Idol Season 11: The Way Back

My mom and aunts would always tell me stories of my grandfather who I never met. His big sticking point to them had always been family stays together, no matter what. He would remind them that they were three sisters and they only had each other. It became a mantra that was drilled into them and they could recite long after he was gone ( Read more... )

We have a bit of history in common! My maternal family survived the Holocaust and moved from Czechoslovakia to Israel aster the war; my uncle and birth mother were born there, and they moved to the US when she was 5, if memory serves. I met her a few times but not the rest of the family (as I was adopted).

I’m sorry you had such a toxic relationship, but glad your child will be surrounded by love!

Sounds similar to both my mom and dad's side of the family except my parents didn't come to the US until they were adults (my mom was 18 and my dad was 21 or 22) :)

I can't believe that your cousin would say something so insensitive and hurtful. That's so cruel.

I would say THEY violated your grandfather's wishes by abusing their own family members.

Very true. They would tell you it doesn't matter though what they said because blood should be thicker than water *rolls eyes*

if blood is thicker than water maybe they should act like it

like... why is that phrase supposed to mean that you are supposed to put up with them treating you like shit, instead of meaning that they should not treat you like shit?

I see this as the main difference between individualist and collectivist societies...While I think it's important to keep family together, there should also be some sort of politeness and restraint associated with this :/ Maybe I'm overstepping my bounds in saying this, but if your mom had dementia, then there might be mental problems with your other members too...just an observation from their reactions. That's definitely not a reason to associate with them, though.

I'm pretty sure at least the aunt that I still do talk to is showing signs of dementia. My other aunt I'm pretty sure is a narcissist.
