Author's Note: Ummm, wow, this is different. I really try to make these drabble challenges a bit happier than the ones I make at susancaspian today I failed that challenge. Other than that, I like it, but It's definitely different that almost anything I've written. So if you find it absolutely unbelievable, blasphemous and such? Tell me. I have a twisted set of emotions, and well, I don't always make things super clear, so comments are love :)
At the helm of a ship stood a man, a king, staring at the star strewn sky. After minutes of silence he then began to speak in a tone that he thought he lost long ago, fear.
"What am I going to do? I don't understand, Aslan. Why now? Why did you have to bring me back now? I'm not ready, not ready at all."
Thinking he was still alone Edmund sat down and placed his head in his hands. But he wasn't, not really.
"Edmund? Is that you?"
Wiping the tears from his eyes Edmund placed a false smile on his face and cheerily answered, "Yes, Caspian, did you need something?"
"No, I figured you could use some company."
And with that Caspian walked over to where Ed was sitting, sat next to him, and added, "Don't pretend you're okay, Ed. You hate taking the night shift, what's wrong?"
Placing his head back in his hands, Edmund's shoulders started to shake, with silent sobs and then he mumbled, "We're leaving again Caspian, again. Don't tell me we aren't, I can feel it, we've done our duty, He's gonna send us home again. He isn't going to let us stay, He's not going to let you come with us, and I get to go home, and break my sister's heart all over again, how's that fair? After all we've done? How could he do this to us? We weren't supposed to come back and still see you, I can't lie to her Caspian, the only thing that get's her through the day, is the knowledge that you were already dead. She could handle that, she can't handle knowing that we saw you, when she couldn't, It's going to break her."
With a helpless look on his face Caspian whispered, "Ed, I can't promise much, but I can say that this isn't the end, we'll meet again, all of us. Someday, I can feel it. Aslan wouldn't turn his back on us after everything. We just have to have faith in him. We have to trust him."
"What if I don't want to anymore?"
"Then you have to try, Ed. You have to, so do I, I don't want to accept this. But there has to be a reason. He's got a plan, It'll all work out."
Wiping his eyes, Ed stood up and whispered, "I hope you're right."
Watching him walk back to the cabin area, Caspian whispered, "Me too."
