On the other hand, it's confusing in all sorts of ways he could do without.
Like, for example, the fact that he's walking down the road, minding his own business, and there's Hasi in a bikini reading Nabokov.

She's not wholly unprepared, here - Martel left her a voicemail that indicated he'd met Raylan, but she doesn't know how much information was exchanged between them. She pushes her sunglasses up onto her forehead and turns to look at Raylan with a smile that's warm despite her faint uncertainty in the background of her mind.
"Hey, stranger. Back again, huh?"

"One of my favorites." She turns over and sits up, fussing with her hair - it's pulled back, a little messily for her tastes, but she's not in the mood to redo it all right now. "It's good to see you again. You look like you've had a day, though."

The best part about coming to Xanadu when it's winter in Dunedin is that she has a completely valid reason to roll off at least three of the layers she's wearing, so her cheerfully trilled greeting is accompanied by the fact she's carrying the leggings and shoes she was wearing about fifteen minutes ago and while her sweater is as long as some dresses, it's not actually a dress, Enfys.
Instead of coming up by Hasi, she comes up near Hasi and then sits down to stick her feet in the water. "What's shaking?"

Hasi figures a sweater long enough to be a dress may as well be one, really.
"Absolutely nothing," Hasi calls, lifting her head from her book - heels still kicking the air a little, because that's the point of wearing them right now, the aesthetic laziness of it all. She smiles at Enfys. "Which is just how I like it, at least for today. How are you?"

"Tired of looking for work," Enfys says, pulling a long face at Hasi that doesn't look even slightly convincing, before laughing and stretching out backwards with her feet still dipped underwater. "I'm going to end up applying to be a seasonal lifeguard or something ridiculous. I like the sound of absolutely nothing!"

"That's the worst thing, isn't it? They tell you that a college degree means you have all of these options, and then when you just want something to pay the bills with--" She gestures, loosely, sympathetic. "Overqualified."
