Part III
"...You never were much of a talker, were you?"
I can hear you laughing to yourself...
I started sneaking over to your place more often; it was hard not to. My mother never looked for me. And the best part was she couldn't hurt me if I wasn't there. So the more time I spent with you, the less time I spent trying to calm my breathing. The less time I spent thinking of where else I could hide. The less time I spent with my hands held over my ears. Things were a bit better compared to before. But lately whenever I came over, you would be struggling at that table over some piece of paper.
"I don't get thiiiiis!" You tussled your hair as you leaned back in a chair and looked at me.
I was sleeping on the carpeted floor with Ran, but your outburst woke me up. I had an odd dream. I didn't see anything, I was surrounded by darkness, but I definitely heard something. A series of words repeating in my head... I couldn't remember what they were though, so I just dismissed it. I rubbed my eyes, stood up, and walked over to you. I placed my hands on the edge of the wooden table and rested my chin on my hands. "What is it?" I asked.
"It's called math, Kazuya."
"...Oh." I blinked. "That stuff?" I pointed to a book on the floor by Ran.
You looked over at the brown puppy and raised a brow. "How… You... Please tell me you weren't trying to read my math book."
"I thought lying was bad."
"What kid reads a math book?" You laughed.
"You're a kid too and you read it," I said.
"Well, I mean... I have to..."
"It was boring... there weren't a lot of pictures and it just had a lot of numbers." I walked over to retrieve the book with both hands and pushed it up onto the table.
"I hate school." Your shoulders slumped as you stared at the paper in front of you. "I wish I didn't have to go."
I didn't know what to say.
"That way, I could spend more time with you!" You suddenly pulled me up into your chair, and I leaned forward to look at your paper and read the first problem.
1 + 1 =
You scribbled something after the equals sign that I couldn't read, but all the other problems were still blank. "How did you figure out this one?" I turned my body around, back to the table, to face you and look into your warm brown eyes.
"Everyone knows what one plus one is, Kazuya," you began. "Look, you know how to count, right?"
I nodded.
"Now look, my teacher told me that sometimes it's easier if you use objects at first. That way, you can see what you're trying to figure out," you explained. "So, there's one of Kazuya, and there's one of me. If you put us together, how many people are there?"
"One," I answered, and you fell silent.
You smiled at me as your arms encircled my waist. "That's wrong, Kazuya. We're two separate people. If you put us together, there're still two of us."
"I don't get it." I stared at you, confused.
You smiled again. “It’s okay. You’ll get it one day." You moved your head forward to rest it on mine.
"Why can't you do the next one?" I shifted around and stared down at the next problem.
"Two plus two... It's different."
"How?"
"Bigger numbers!" you stated the oh-so-obvious to a six-year-old.
"Do what you just did."
"Huh?"
"If there's two of me-"
"There's not two of you," you interrupted.
"But if-" I tried to continue where I had left off, but it seemed that you would never let me finish that particular sentence.
"Kazuyaaa~ There's only one of you. Only one. And there will always only ever be one Kazuya. You're going to confuse me." You pouted, a sigh soon after leaving your lips. “Really don’t get this,” you complained, leaning back in your chair with your hands tightly gripping the table.
“J…!”
“Ah, sorry,” you apologized, patting me on the head after you leveled the chair.
"Maybe if you read your book..." I reached for the textbook on the table while you held my waist in place, not wanting me to fall over, and opened it from the back cover.
"Kazuya I'm not that far into it yet, I'm way back at..." You stopped talking and glared at the book that lay open in front of us, smiling all the while.
"Why didn't I think of that?” Your eyes brightened.
"Huh?"
"The answers are in the back of the book," you explained to me as you looked over the pages intently.
"Isn't that cheating?" I eyed the delighted expression on your face.
"Well... yeah, but..."
I shut the book and hopped off of your lap, running into another room in the house. You didn't waste time in following after, Ran right behind you wanting to join in on the fun.
"Kazuya, give it back, please?"
