"There is no such thing as writing: there is only re-writing."

Which is a thing one of my profs at UO liked to say, and he was probably right. (Or: write?)

Apropos of this, I am thinking of revising Freefall once again, notably because I think that it is one of the weakest stories in my body of work and that this is particularly unfortunate as it serves as the introductory piece to the eponymous story cycle. But also, of course, because my ideas have developed somewhat since I first posted it, and even since I last edited it, and because I really could use the practice. I think it could be a useful way to hone my (re)writing skills, and possibly develop new ones.

With that in mind, I would like to solicit some feedback, from anyone who has time/feels motivated/has nothing better to do. You can find the most recent version of the story on AO3, here:

I don't promise to follow any suggestions, but I do promise to treat any feedback you might have respectfully. And if you know some other nit-pickers who might like to take a look - by all means, feel free to tell them! The more the merrier.

In addition to feedback in the sense of "helpful suggestions," I would be very happy to entertain critique in the literary sense - not as "what you did wrong" but as a reading of the piece from any given point of view. Such readings are always revealing and valuable, and I often find that what I had in mind is not what readers discover in the text, a departure I find endlessly fascinating. If you feel motivated to embark on such a "meta" project, you should feel free to post the results on fanlit_project, which if you didn't know is a comm I mod devoted to the treatment of fan fiction as literature. (Feedback or criticism in the more generic sense is obviously not appropriate to such a comm, and therefore should be sent to me directly.)

I think we have a tendency in fandom to comment on fics either in a highly celebratory (squee!) or highly critical (too much Character X!) vein: I am decidedly interested in seeing commentary on any fic that is directed more toward its literary nature.
