I was thinking about you today! The company I work for prints advertisements for Mega brands and we have one right now whose new campaign is a real stinker. Don't they test market this stuff? I mean, we're all just a bunch of blue collar schmoes and certainly outside their demographic (or THEY would think)but we're all pretty sensitive to this stuff since we see so much of it. What gives?
Yeah, normally with large clients they have budgeted for creative/copy testing. All the TV spots you see have been thoroughly tested (even the terrible ones). So much money is spent on direct mail (and it's been around so long) that the agencies that specialize in it are pretty attune to what will be successful. Sometimes the clients are complete idiots though and manage to get work produced that everyone else knows will fall flat. Then they wonder who to blame. Ha!
We get especially hysterical if you can cover the text and have NO IDEA what the fuck they are advertising. I don't care for their merchandise, but Hilfiger stuff always looks amazing to me. And Brooks Brothers always looks dull and dated. They seriously need to re-tune. The company I work for does most of Stage Stores and Phillip Van Huesen, so it's a lot of THAT kind of stuff.
