Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom? (Erm...I didn't create this meme, but I assume this means a crossover?)
I am generally beyond fail at crossovers. I don't know why...they just don't come that easily to me and I think I get too obsessed about everything fitting perfect, which of course it would not. The closest I've gotten is writing a Fight Club "flavored" fic. I think I used a lot of the themes in Fight Club, but didn't make any effort to match the original story. Kind of just put BSG characters into that gritty type setting. I really love that fic, so I think it worked. If I ever do another crossover, I imagine it would be the same thing.
Fusion type story? I guess I don't see the difference. If I plop Kara and Lee into Sense and Sensibility, wouldn't that be a crossover? THIS is how much I fail. :( I can't even see distinctions in this genre as a whole. Help!
Lol. I'm not really sure I get the awkward wording either. I'm not sure if recasting/adapting The Cutting Edge with all BSG characters counts, but if so...YES. And we'll all be doing it at ReelPilots in the month of November too!
I do this kind of thing a lot, actually. I think "fusions" are my favorite type of story to write.
In The Almost Empty House I put Sherlock Holmes and John Watson into the Harry Potter universe, but there's very little interaction with any main Harry Potter characters; it's basically just them and their fellow "Sherlock" characters being themselves in the Potterverse, and it references dialogue, plot points, and metaphors from both fandoms. I put Kara and Lee into their own version of the Hades/Persephone myth in He Kindly Stopped for Me. I put Bill and Lee into Batman and Robin in Show me a hero. I put Kara, Lee, Bill, and Admiral Cain into the Whedonverse (set a century before Buffy was born) in Prophecy Girl. All those, I think, would count as "fusions" or "AU"s. I never marked them as "crossovers" only because I post my stories to fanfiction.net, and if you mark your story as a crossover between two fandoms there, it will be posted to the boards for both fandoms. I didn't want Buffy fans to come into Prophecy Girl and

My upcoming Star Trek big bang is my first attempt at doing this. It's harder than I thought it would be, because you want to keep it a little bit unpredictable while still appealing to people who come to it because they already like the story, and since I know not many people will have read the book I tried to strike a balance between it being enjoyable to anyone who's familiar with both canons and people who will only be familiar with one. It's also, I'd imagine, a much bigger challenge to avoid ending up repeating events/lines verbatim when it's based on a book rather than a movie.

Actually, I think it means more of a fusion type story - not a crossover but a story being retold with different characters.
That said, I can't see doing this and it's something that I saw a lot in some of my other fandoms. I prefer telling BSG stories with BSG characters.
Let's not get into my Bill/Saul Twilight dream, shall we?

Personally I cannot stand crossovers. But I've seen well-done fusions.
ETA: Taragel is talking about fusions it seems.
